2023 Summer Enrichment Course Options

Location and Times: All elementary school enrichment sessions will be hosted at Central Elementary School, middle school sessions at HMS, and high school sessions at HMHS and will run from 8:30 am - 11:30 am.  All instructors are HSD Certified Teachers. 

Session A (6 Sessions): Wednesday, July 5th - Thursday, July 13th

Course Title: Adventures in Art!

Instructor: Kristin Kimmell

Target Audience: Grades K-2 (Session A), Grades 3-5 (Session B)

Duration: 2 weeks (Session A or Session B)

Location: Central Elementary Art Room 191

Description: Join Mrs. Kimmell for fun 2D and 3D art adventures, including drawing, painting, mask-making, jewelry design, and working with clay. We will work indoors and outdoors, with time for games and yoga, too! 

Course Title: From Book to Movie: Screenwriting!

Instructor: Allie Baer

Target Audience: Grades 6-8

Duration: 2 weeks (Session A or Session B)

Location: HMS, Room 59

Description: Do you love books and movies? Have you ever wondered how your favorite stories went from the pages of a book to the big screen? What about writing movie scenes? Join us this summer for a fun two-week course where students will explore some of the most popular book-to-movie adaptations, like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and the Hunger Games! In the first week, we'll watch movie clips and read book excerpts to compare and contrast how story elements were shown on screen versus paper. Students will also discuss why some changes are necessary when adapting a book to a movie. In the second week, it's the student's turn to be a screenwriter! Students will learn the basics of screenwriting and practice writing their scenes based on a book they chose. One day your scene will be turned into a movie! This course is perfect for kids who love to read, watch movies, and be creative. Let's have a fun summer of fun, learning, and imagination. 

Course Title: Creating a Music Festival

Instructor: Carrington Thompson

Target Audience: Grades 4-5

Duration: 2 weeks (Session A only)

Location: Central Elementary, Room 30

Description: If you have ever been to a music festival, you know that much planning and collaboration go into making it a success. In this course, students will use problem-solving, collaboration, classroom design, and planning to successfully pull off their music festival! This is the music festival course I teach every summer, but this year I am taking it to the next level with added digital design. Students will need their Chromebooks for this course as we will take almost all of the design aspects of this course into the digital realm with a heavy focus on branding and marketing. Activities range from brainstorming to time management, supply gathering, and more. Your student will have so much fun in this course! Subject areas covered include language arts, basic math, music, and art. 

Course Title: Creative Writing (Elementary)

Instructor: Bethany Kirk

Target Audience: Grades 3-5

Duration: 2 weeks (Session A or Session B)

Location: Central Elementary, Room
Description: In this course, we will engage in activities that promote imaginative thinking and enhance our writing skills. We will create original works such as poems, comic strips, and short stories. We’ll build on each other's ideas and generate stories in an environment that encourages creativity and individuality. From exploring writing samples to developing our storylines, the possibilities are endless in creative writing! If you are in grades 3-5, please join us in breaking out of the boundaries of reality and embracing our original ideas as they come. WRITE ON! 

Course Title: Creative Writing (High School)

Description: Come learn the basics of fiction writing (descriptive writing, characterization, plot structure) in this fun, interactive class...and write your own short story in the process! 

Course Title: Growth Mindset and Mindfulness!

Instructor: Caroline Brown, Certified School Counselor

Target Audience: Grades 2-4

Duration: 2 weeks (Session A or Session B)

Location: Central Elementary School, Room 102

Description: Sign up to grow your mindset with School Counselor Ms. Brown! Did you know that developing your growth mindset is strongly linked to happiness and greater achievement throughout life? Beginning this lifelong journey early on is so beneficial! This course teaches students skills and strategies to help them feel empowered, more confident, and resilient. Students will participate in activities and lessons that develop a growth mindset and mindfulness skills through age-appropriate texts, videos, crafting, and hands-on experiences working independently and in groups. Students will take away skills, tips, tricks, and practices they can apply daily to support a growth mindset!

Course Title: Historical Haddonfield Walking Tour (High School)

Target Audience: Grades 9-12

Duration: 2 weeks (Session A Only)

Description: Historical Haddonfield Walking Tours will help students design their own walking tours of the town through primary and secondary sources, including research at the Historical Society of Haddonfield.

Course Title: Historical Philadelphia Walking Tour (High School)

Instructor: David Reader

Target Audience: Grades 9-12

Duration: 2 weeks (Session B Only)

Location: HMHS, Room C117
Description: Historical Philadelphia Walking Tours will help students design their own walking tours of Philadelphia through primary and secondary sources, including visits to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania for hands-on research opportunities. Both sessions will incorporate architecture, maps, terrain, and historical events into their tours. Some travel to Philadelphia will be included.    

Course Title: Literacy and the Arts! 

Instructor: Christina Parady

Target Audience: Grades 1-3

Duration: 2 weeks (Session A or Session B)

Location: Central Elementary, Room 112
Course Description: Join Ms. Parady as we "travel" worldwide to learn about literacy and the arts. Each day, students will come into the classroom and visit one country. Students will read books, cook food, create art projects, listen to music, and play games centered around the country we are learning about. Sign up for an unforgettable summer learning experience!!  

Course Title: Lego SPIKE Essential Robotics

Instructor: Amanda Leighton

Target Audience: Grades 4-5

Duration: 4 Weeks (Session C)

Location: HMS, Room 275
Course Description:   Students will be engaged in hands-on investigation of STEAM concepts and problem-solving.  Students will unlock their creativity through storytelling, collaborate with peers, practice coding and computational skills, understand sequences, loops, cause and effect, and test, debug, and experiment. 

Course Title: Lego SPIKE Prime Robotics

Instructor: Jason Russo

Target Audience: Grades 6-8

Duration:  4 weeks (Session C)

Location: HMS,  Room
Course Description: Students will explore more advanced computer science concepts that continuously engage students through playful learning activities to think critically and solve complete problems.  Students will think critically and analyze data, prototype solutions to real-world problems, practice icon-based or text-based coding with Python, and hone STEAM and 21st-century skills.  

Course Title: STEM: The Hess Truck's Here!

Instructor: Courtney Baker

Target Audience: Grades 3-5

Duration: 2 weeks (Session A or Session B)

Location: HMS, Room 61 

Description: “The Hess Truck’s Here…” for STEM! Hess Toy Trucks are much more than collectors’ items. They are useful teaching tools that offer a variety of practical and fun ways to teach STEM subjects! Using a grant from Hess Trucks and Baylor College of Medicine, students will use the 2021 Hess cargo plane, accompanying jet sets, and the 2019 tow truck sets to kick off investigating their questions about the toys, planes, and trucks! Students will complete STEM investigations and design challenges as they navigate their questions.

Course Title: Summer Research - The Design of Coffee (High School)

Instructor: Michael Romea

Target Audience: Grades 9-12

Duration: 2 weeks (Session A Only) 

Location: HMHS, C212

Description: Join our ongoing research into the principles and practice of brewing a truly excellent cup of coffee while getting an introduction to chemical engineering. The Design of Coffee also introduces chemical engineering, as illustrated by the roasting and brewing of coffee. Hands-on coffee experiments demonstrate fundamental scientific principles, including material balances, chemical kinetics, mass transfer, fluid mechanics, conservation of energy, and colloidal phenomena. The experiments lead to an engineering design challenge where students can strive to make the best-tasting coffee using the least energy – a fun and tasty spin on a classic engineering optimization problem.

Course Title: Summer Research - The Design of Pizza (High School)

Instructor: Michael Romeo

Target Audience: Grades 9-12

Duration: 2 weeks (Session B Only)

Location: HMHS, C212

Description: Attempting to craft the perfect pizza is actually more science than art.  Some interesting science goes into the processes used to create pizza dough and make mozzarella cheese.  Join our ongoing research as we explore chemical and biological concepts while using the engineering design process to create our perfect pizza. We track each trial batch’s variables: ingredient balances, mix-rise-bake times, mix-rise-bake temperatures, etc. We’ll test and iterate to find the ideal recipes for our process.  We will also visit some of our businesses downtown that have mastered this scientific process

Course Title: The Queen of Songwriting: Taylor Swift

Instructor: Carrington Thompson

Location: Central Elementary, Room 30

Target Audience: Grades 5-7

Duration: 2 weeks (Session B only)

Description: You know her, you love her, but why?! This course is a deep dive into the genius that is Taylor Swift. We will explore her music in true Swiftie fashion by dissecting her various “eras.” Each era has unique song styles, lyrical choices, music videos, easter eggs, and more. Students in this course will be able to glean from Taylors Swift’s skills and have opportunities to experiment and explore their songwriting abilities. Students will also develop some ukulele skills as we will use ukuleles for the music portion of songwriting. As a caution, many of Swift’s lyrics include love, loss, insecurities, bullying, family, isolation, fame, hatred, starting over, and growing up. These topics will be discussed in depth in relation to her music. Swift’s songs with explicit language will be excluded from this course. This course is for students who just completed 5th, 6th, or 7th grade.
