Syllabus- Span 1 CP and Honors
COURSE DESCRIPTION
SPANISH 1 CP
All activities and evaluations are designed to accommodate the early stages of language acquisition; grammatical structures, lexical items, culture, and geography are presented accordingly. This course heavily emphasizes the development of communication skills: the ability to comprehend native speakers of Spanish, to speak Spanish with them, to understand Spanish- language texts, and to communicate ideas in Spanish primarily in the present tense. Students must master the basics of Spanish grammar, syntax, and pronunciation to be promoted to the second level. Homework, participation, projects, and evaluations are frequent and crucial to the course. The class is conducted in Spanish, with English used to clarify and introduce cultural items.
SPANISH 1 HONORS
Students I Honors begins a possible four-year sequence in which basic expressions, vocabulary, and grammar are introduced. The honors level student is expected to have excellent study and communication skills and be able to independently complete their assignments in due time. The student is encouraged to express him/herself on topics such as greetings, descriptions, weather, pastimes, likes, and dislikes. Communication among students is an integral part of each lesson and daily participation in the target language is expected. Material is presented in a cultural context, enabling the student to understand differences and similarities among societies. Material will be presented at a faster pace, and higher level thinking skills will be expected. More complex ideas and topics will be explored. Students who successfully complete Spanish I Honors will be prepared to enroll in Spanish II Honors. Spanish is spoken by the instructor for the majority of the class; however, grammar and more technical explanations may take place in English.
