HACC announces plans for spring 2021 semester

Thank you for your continued support of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, as we help our students navigate the dynamics of the COVID-19 global pandemic.

On Sept. 9, 2020, we shared with our students and employees that the College campuses will remain closed until at least May 14, 2021, and classes and services will be provided online. The exception will be the hands-on/experiential components of approved courses.

This decision was made after review of federal and state guidelines, the collegewide COVID-19 Task Force recommendations and feedback from students and employees.

Please visit https://hacc.edu/Resources/fall-2020-announcement.cfm for more details.

Thank you and stay safe!

Meet Rhianna: From Foster Care to Honors Program Student

“Just because we are a community college does NOT mean that the education we gain from here is any less than of a typical 4-year University.”

Rhianna Dupla thought she was “never smart enough, or even good enough to attend college and even possibly graduate high school…” She grew up in foster homes and group living and graduated from high school with a 2.5 GPA.

After deciding she didn’t want “to be a statistic…aged out foster/state youth that struggles throughout their life and never achieves their goals and aspirations,” she applied to HACC.

Making Your Retirement Account Work for You

By Thomas M. Shorb, Esq.

Suppose you want to make a donation to a charitable organization. Have you ever considered using your retirement account?

Many people are unaware of the possibility of using their individual retirement account (IRA) to fund charitable gifts upon their death. In actuality, there are many advantages to making gifts to charitable organizations through retirement funds. Charities are not required to pay any state inheritance tax or federal estate tax, and they do not pay federal income tax. These tax exclusions allow charitable gifts made from IRA funds to reach the intended beneficiary – free from state and federal taxation.

Suppose you have an IRA as well as cash or other assets to give away by your will. You have a favorite nonprofit organization that you would like to support through a charitable bequest, but you also have children whom you would like to receive the rest of your estate. The question is how can you plan the distributions so that each beneficiary – your children and your charity of choice – will receive the maximum possible amount?

One solution that I often advise people to consider is to name their favorite charity as a direct beneficiary of their IRA. There is a benefit to using your IRA, and not your will, to direct a gift to a charitable organization. This is illustrated by the following two options:

By simply reversing your beneficiaries – and using your IRA to make the charitable gift and using your will to provide for your children – significant wealth can be shielded from federal income taxation.

If you are interested in making a donation to the HACC Foundation in support of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, please consider making the HACC Foundation a direct beneficiary of your IRA. Please consult with your professional advisor to ensure your gifts provide the greatest possible benefits to your beneficiaries.

Upcoming Events

Virtual Photography Exhibition of Internationally Known Artist Hosted by HACC

An exhibition of photographs by Alida Fish will be presented virtually on the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery webpage of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, from Oct. 12- Nov. 5, 2020.

Fish is known for her still-life work using manipulated photo processes that feature scenes with a mythical whimsy. She says, “…The impulse to populate and control an invented world has led to photographs of sculptures that appear to metamorphose into living flesh, plants that emerge as heroic in their struggle to exist, and curious objects that are a testament to the wonders of life on this planet.”

Fish’s photographs have been exhibited in many galleries and museums. She has received numerous grants and been sponsored as a resident artist by U.S. and international institutions. She serves on the Board of Trustees for Penland School of Crafts in Penland, North Carolina, and is Professor Emerita at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She is represented by Alan Klotz Gallery in New York City and Schmidt-Dean Gallery in Philadelphia.

Fish will conduct an artist lecture via Zoom on Oct. 28 at 5:30 p.m. The lecture and virtual exhibition are free and open to the public.

The Rose Lehrman Art Gallery received state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

For more information about the exhibit or to register for the artist lecture, please contact Shawn Williams at 717-780-2478 or smwillia@hacc.edu.
