July is...
National Culinary Arts Month
Greetings, HACC supporters!
July is National Culinary Arts Month. This month is set aside to recognize cooks and chefs who bring delicious cuisine to our tables. Innovatively YOURS, the HACC Culinary Arts program, provides students with hands-on learning opportunities in our on-campus labs and off-campus commercial food and beverage operations that are open to the public.
Thanks to a grant from the HACC Foundation, the program will benefit from the creation of a premier culinary demonstration kitchen. The kitchen will help instructors make cooking accessible as they demonstrate delicious recipes and menus in support of the culinary and baking programs student experience.

Melissa is enrolled in HACC’s Culinary Arts Program, and her goal is to eventually open her own Mexican cuisine restaurant with recipes passed down from generation to generation.
“[HACC] was convenient and offered online courses that I can do on my own time!”

The Nursing Program at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, began in 1969 with 28 students. Today, almost one out of five HACC students are enrolled in that program. HACC alumnus Dan Miller and family have chosen to honor his late wife’s memory by establishing the Deborah K. Levan "Debbi" Miller Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund.
Mr. Miller attended HACC utilizing the GI Bill in the early 1980s. Upon graduation, Mr. Miller attended Temple University and obtained a journalism degree. He met his future wife, Debbi, through a mutual friend in spring 1988.
Debbi was a single parent when she decided to pursue a nursing degree from HACC. She graduated and worked in the field for over 40 years until her death in March 2022. Mrs. Miller spent her life caring for and about other people.
“HACC nursing students are amazing. There is no greater investment than in people – especially those who are trained to care for us medically. This new scholarship will help students achieve their dreams,” Linnie Carter, Ph.D. APR, HACC’s vice president of college advancement and executive director of the HACC Foundation, said.
Interested students should visit www.hacc.edu/scholarships to apply for this and other scholarships.
The demand for licensed massage therapists in Pennsylvania and around the nation continues to grow. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, there were 144,500 open massage therapy positions in 2020. That need is projected to grow by as much as 32% through 2030. HACC is positioned to help fill massage therapist openings in Central Pennsylvania and beyond.
To meet the increased demand, HACC’s noncredit Massage Therapy Program is adding 1,500 square feet of instructional space, which will increase class capacity while also offering continuing education programs for licensed massage therapists.
The College will celebrate the newly expanded space as well as the program’s 15-year anniversary on Aug. 17 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Festivities will be held outside the Bruce E. Cooper Student Center and in the John Hall Technology Building on the Harrisburg Campus. Activities will include:
Anatomy review course
Chair massages
Continuing education opportunities
Guided labyrinth walks
Sound immersion meditation
To RSVP, please email nmkottca@hacc.edu by Aug. 10.
