Student Spotlight

Meet Nathan: Reaching the Next Level

Nathan, a psychology student at HACC, said there are four people he will “need forever” and who helped him choose HACC. The first two are his children. Nathan said that “wanting to do better for them as well as myself is more than enough motivation for signing up for HACC.” The other two people are his mentor and best friend. “Without my fantastic four I would not be as motivated as I am right now,” he said.

Honoring our #HACCparents

Did you know? Every fourth Sunday of July in the United States is National Parents’ Day. At HACC, many of our students are completing their education while raising families, including:

  • Starkisha, a single mother of seven who is achieving her dreams

  • Alexander, a virtual learning student and working dad

  • Jenny, mom and domestic violence survivor

Updates from HACC Students – ‘The HACC Community is Extraordinary’

Please see the following student updates from the past year made possible by our devoted community of HACC supporters. Thank you!

  • “2020 has been a rough year for everyone across the country. My family had the loss of two very important family members and I also had to go through chemotherapy and radiation during this pandemic. I am still currently fighting cancer and trying to figure out what is best for me and my health. I count my blessings every day and I am very lucky to be sitting here today to write you this letter. Your donation to help me continue my education is another blessing that I do not take for granted.” ~ Carole H., HACC student

  • “No matter what life has thrown my way, the people at HACC have always worked hard to find solutions not only to help me move forward with my education, but also empower me to become my very best self. Thank you for being a part of that journey. I look forward to using my experiences and education to serve underprivileged communities as an RN and make an impact where it is most needed.” ~ Brianna G., HACC student

  • “I wanted to say Thank you It has been a rough year for me and I'm sure for everybody around the world. This kind gesture gave me hope honestly It showed me that somebody cares for my education other than myself. Supporting someone with a gift or even kind words can go a long way. I will follow your lead of kindness and give out a hot free meal to the homeless around my neighborhood because everyone deserves a little help especially now a days. I want to help people as much as I can whenever I can, having support can really change your life.” ~ Jennifer P., HACC student

We hope that these updates remind you how far a single gift can go to change the lives of our students and their families.

Virtually View the Photographic Works of Internationally Known Artist at HACC

“Eyes of Another,” an exhibition of photographs by internationally known artist, Antonio McAfee, will be displayed in a virtual art exhibit curated by the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, from Sept. 1-Oct. 1, 2021.

McAfee’s work addresses the complexity of representation by appropriating and manipulating photographic portraits of African Americans in the 19th century, funk, and rhythm and blues (R&B) musicians, as well as transitioned family members. In his work, he attempts to provide alternate ways to see historical portraits of African Americans, allowing the subjects to have a multitude of possibilities, real and imagined, within a still image.

In McAfee’s “Eyes of Another” series, the reimagined images provide a less static and more inexplicable depiction of the individuals, breaking down their image to reveal red and blue versions that play with the act of viewing and perception.

McAfee has been featured in various publications and catalogs, including the Baltimore Magazine and The Washington Post. He appropriated photographs from W.E.B Du Bois and Thomas Calloway’s “Exhibition of American Negroes” and Ronald Rooks into various 3D images.

Using Zoom, McAfee will discuss his work on Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. To learn how to join the lecture, please visit the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery website. The lecture and exhibit are free and open to the public.

The Rose Lehrman Art Gallery received state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council On The Arts and from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Event details are subject to change. For more information, please contact Shawn Williams at 717-780-2478 or smwillia@hacc.edu.
