HACC Medical Assistant Students Benefit From Support From the HACC Foundation and the Justamere Foundation

The College is offering its Medical Assistant Certificate Program as a part-time, noncredit evening program in January 2023 to address a shortage in this high-demand field. Eligible Dauphin County residents can receive up to 90% of the cost of HACC’s tuition, thanks to the generosity of the HACC Foundation and Justamere Foundation. With the tuition assistance, each student will pay only $600 plus the cost of medical and background clearances.

Linnie S. Carter, Ph.D., APR, the vice president of college advancement at HACC and executive director of the HACC Foundation, said, “This partnership involves the largest community college in Pennsylvania, a foundation focused on generational poverty and the medical profession. For us, this is an ideal coalition to ensure that Central Pennsylvanians have trained medical assistants when we need them – in fact, BEFORE we need them. We are grateful for the Justamere Foundation’s investment in HACC students and our community. We will uphold our commitment in this partnership in hopes this support will continue in the future.”

Classes begin Jan. 23, 2023, and will be held Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Instruction will be a combination of in person and virtual classes.

Please share this information with interested future students who live in Dauphin County. To schedule an appointment and get further details about the tuition assistance, please email jafoster@hacc.edu or call 717-221-1354.

Painted Compositions & Forms

Painted Compositions and Forms by internationally known Artist, Claes Gabriel, will be displayed in the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, from Jan. 17 – Feb. 10, 2023. The public is invited to a free lecture by the artist Feb. 9, 2023, at 6 p.m. in room 214 of Whitaker Hall on HACC’s Harrisburg Campus. A reception will follow the lecture at the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery.

Claes Gabriel is a Philadelphia-based artist from Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Gabriel immigrated to the States in 1989 and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1999. His three-dimensional paintings ring with the spiritual energy of beings from folklore and his own imagined tales, capturing a deified presence in each piece. Inspired by modernists such as Frank Stella and Sam Gilliam, Gabriel’s work lives beyond the confines of a flat wall; he stretches and sews canvases taut over wooden armatures to construct masks and free-standing statues.

Gabriel’s first influence was his father, classically-trained Painter, Jacques Gabriel (1934–1988), whose lush images of peasant life in Haiti depicted the commonplace in the vibrant, modernist language of the extraordinary. Gabriel has exhibited in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Baltimore, MD, Washington DC and Paris, France. His work is included in the permanent collection of the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, MD.

The gallery received state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

For more information about the exhibit at HACC, please contact Shawn Williams at 717-780-2478 or smwillia@hacc.edu.

Explore 23 reasons to visit Career Development and Transfer Services in 2023!

Discover more about your unique self through Career Services. Make this the year you connect with us!

  1. Not sure what to major in? Feeling stuck and not loving your program as much as you anticipated? We’re fully equipped to assist you with these situations here at Career Services.

  2. Complete an interest inventory to learn more about your interests and uncover occupations that may relate to your results. This will be especially helpful if you are “undecided” in your choice of major.

  3. Identify your career goals and what steps might be necessary to complete them. This might mean looking ahead at transfer agreements if you know you want to aim for that bachelor’s degree, or identifying where you want to be in a year/3 years/5 years, etc. and how to get there professionally.

  4. Learn to identify your skills. The average adult develops hundreds of skills, but most individuals cannot identify five skills, let alone market these to an employer. EVERYONE has skills—we can guide you to uncover them!

  5. Improve your confidence!! Talking seamlessly about yourself, your experience, and your skills boosts your confidence in general and helps you attain it in the interview. If you can talk about yourself with ease, you’re one step closer to landing that position.

Need a few more? We have plenty!

  1. Uncover your personality traits by completing a personality assessment and learn how your results may lend themselves well to specific career fields. This is especially helpful for those struggling to decide between a few career paths, someone just beginning, or even someone interested in learning more about themselves.

  2. Examine career opportunities for your major and uncover career growth opportunities related to pursuing additional training/education.

  3. Consider a parallel pathway if you enjoy the broad field but are questioning your major or program. There might be something similar you hadn’t known about before that could be a perfect fit!

  4. Explore the “world of work” by completing a career research technique like informational interviewing. Learn how to approach employers, request an informational interview, and receive guidance on questions you may wish to ask. Discover how this valuable networking tool has far more benefits than just assisting with narrowing down a career path.

  5. Plan to attend the numerous Career Services workshops offered throughout the semester. Many instructors even offer extra credit in their classes for you attending these workshops. Topics in the past have revolved around career exploration and job searching. For the most updated offerings, please log on to the HACC homepage and click on “Current Student,” “Career Services,” and “events.”

“But…what if I’m a bit further into the process already?” Not to worry! Keep reading…

  1. Receive guidance on how to arrange a job shadowing opportunity. What an excellent way to learn more about the fields you may wish to pursue by observing professionals directly.

  2. Discover the many benefits of volunteering and how to obtain an opportunity.

  3. Consider interning in your major, either for credit or purely for “work experience.” Internships here at HACC can be arranged for either credit or non-credit. Learn the difference between the two, how to prepare for them and uncover the many internship opportunities that exist.

  4. Schedule a career event into your semester’s plans. These events are excellent opportunities to develop professionally and connect with individuals already working in various fields. You never know what you may learn or who you may meet and connect with that could aid you in getting closer to your career goals. Plus, there are often prize raffles or “giveaways.”

  5. Develop a resume that best showcases employers' education, skills and experience. There are three resume formats, but not one format works for everyone. Identify the resume basics and then learn how to write a resume and cover letter specific to each position you are applying for.

  6. Learn how to develop an “elevator pitch” that best highlights YOUR skills and experience, all the while grabbing an employer’s attention. This “elevator pitch” can be used as you market yourself at job fairs, on the cover letter, communicating over the phone or via Zoom, or at the time of the interview as you answer questions like, “Tell me about yourself” and “Why should I hire you?”

  7. Prepare for your following interview by considering completing a “mock interview” with the Career Services staff. We are happy to help you prepare by practicing some of the most common interview questions and questions directly related to the field you are pursuing.

But wait! Have you thought of these steps yet? 😊

  1. Further uncover what it is you want from your career. What are your workplace values? What needs have to be met for you to be successful?

  2. Network with family, friends, and professors and establish your very own professional “LinkedIn account.” Networking is by far the most effective way to secure employment. Uncover tips on how to network successfully.

  3. Plan to attend HACC’s spring 2023 Career/Internship. Numerous employers will be on hand to discuss internship opportunities that they offer. Opportunities have been obtained by past HACC students who attended this event. Head to THIS link for more awesome events!

  4. Create an overall effective job search strategy well before the time of graduation, which includes understanding your “personal brand.” Job searching becomes, in many cases, a “full-time job,” so we want you to be prepared and help make sure the time you spend is done wisely. You’ll want to include the use of tools like HACC’s job posting service, College Central Network to search for employment opportunities. Also, be sure to attend one of the many Career Fairs being offered this semester. Head to this link for details.

  5. Obtain transfer information and learn more about the transfer and dual admission agreements HACC has with many 4-year colleges and universities during a Transfer Coach appointment.

  6. Come for the approachable and informative staff! We are here and excited to assist and support you, both during your time at HACC and as an Alumni.

We hope to see YOU in 2023! Positive wishes for the new year.
