Casting Call for New Student Orientation Video

The New Student Orientation Team is looking for #HACCProud students to be part of a short video. This video will be titled “Our Purpose” and will be shown to new students at future orientation sessions.

The Theme is "I Belong!"

We are asking for a one to two-minute recording where you will answer the question(s):

How do you belong at HACC? What does HACC’s vision - Learning for All; Learning for Life - mean to you? What is your personalized expression of belonging?

If you have any questions or are interested in being part of the next “Our Purpose” video, please email orientation@hacc.edu for more information!

Struggling with Coursework? Seek Support

When learning challenges, a diagnosis, a medical condition, or even a temporary injury are keeping you from being able to manage coursework, there is available support at HACC. Maybe a bit of extra time on a test because of the need to read items a few times for it to “click” can make a difference or having a better understanding when hearing information rather than reading words leads to better test scores, Student Access may be able to help put a plan together that can help.

Learn more about us.

Fund Your Bright Ideas with a Diversity Innovation Grant!

Do you have an idea for promoting inclusion and diversity at HACC? Perhaps you’d like to put together an event or develop a tool that promotes inclusion. Maybe you have a great idea but need the money to make it happen.

Diversity Innovation Grants (free money) are available for projects, initiatives and activities that support inclusion, diversity and belonging at HACC!

We are seeking proposals from students and employees to engage members of our community in ways that foster inclusion and belonging. A taskforce will evaluate proposals and award grants to those that are accepted. Funds will vary by project but could range up to $5,000.

To learn more, please visit hacc.edu/DiversityFund and click the dropdown for Diversity Innovation Grants. Proposals can be submitted via the dropdown under How to Apply. If you have additional questions, please email Gina Crance, assistant vice president, Student Engagement, at gcrance@hacc.edu.

Heather Durham, Nurse Aide Graduate

Overcoming Obstacles

My name is Heather Durham. I was enrolled in the Nurse Aide class at HACC. It was a very good class with lots of learning tools to help you prepare for the real work!

During my time in the class, I faced several obstacles with my hearing. I am particularly deaf and I wear 2 hearing aids. First, I was not able to hear from the regular stethoscope to take blood pressure; which is required to become a Nurse Aide. HACC made accommodations to allow the use of an amplified stethoscope and also provided one for me to use during the class. Secondly, when my hearing aid broke and I had trouble getting it fixed. With the help of Emanda Reiner and Kelli Christiana, we were able to get an appointment the same day to get it repaired and they allowed me to make up my missed time the next day in class. Finally, was the day after my hearing aid was repaired. The molding came off the hearing aid and got stuck in my ear. A group of fellow classmates saw how upset I was and worked together to get the part out of my ear.

Even after the class was over and I graduated, I was able to use what I learned to help do my job better. When taking my State Registry Exam; to become a registered nurse aide for the Commonwealth of PA, I was able to use the amplified stethoscope from HACC to help accommodate my hearing difficulties. I would like to say that if you’re facing an obstacle, just push through it and continue on your journey.

“Being challenged in life is inevitable, being defeated is optional.” ~ Roger Crawford

HACC Hawks

The Men’s Basketball season is in full swing! Make sure to catch a game and support your HACC Hawks as they compete within the EPAC Conference and Region 19 of the NJCAA. For complete schedule and updates, please go to the HACC Hawks Athletic webpage, which can be found here.

The fall 2022 Esports Season has concluded on a high note for the HACC Hawks! Hearthstone player Raven Fisher “Two for one” secured his ticket to the NJCAAe Hearthstone Championship game after capturing the victory over Three Rivers College: 3-2. On Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022, Raven Fisher entered the Hearthstone Championship game against Hocking College Hawks. Both players battled back and forth to the finish, enduring four rounds in the championship match. In the fourth round, Fisher led with his Warlock against Hocking's Priest. Despite Hocking's strong start "Two for one" quickly established a board presence and began to overwhelm Hocking College with curse mechanics. This placed Hocking in a position where they were unable to recover. "Twoforone's" opponent emoted "You play like the Ancient Ones" and conceded, giving the Championship win to Raven "Two for one" Fisher. This was a monumental victory as it is the first Esports NJCAAe Tournament win for the HACC Hawks! #HACCProud #HACCYeah

The spring 2023 Esports season has begun, so make sure to cheer on your Hawks as they battle in the cyber arena!

Painted Compositions & Forms

Painted Compositions and Forms by internationally known Artist, Claes Gabriel, will be displayed in the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, now – Feb. 10, 2023. The public is invited to a free lecture by the artist Feb. 9, 2023, at 6 p.m. in room 214 of Whitaker Hall on HACC’s Harrisburg Campus. A reception will follow the lecture at the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery.

Claes Gabriel is a Philadelphia-based artist from Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Gabriel immigrated to the States in 1989 and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1999. His three-dimensional paintings ring with the spiritual energy of beings from folklore and his own imagined tales, capturing a deified presence in each piece. Inspired by modernists such as Frank Stella and Sam Gilliam, Gabriel’s work lives beyond the confines of a flat wall; he stretches and sews canvases taut over wooden armatures to construct masks and free-standing statues.

Gabriel’s first influence was his father, classically-trained Painter, Jacques Gabriel (1934–1988), whose lush images of peasant life in Haiti depicted the commonplace in the vibrant, modernist language of the extraordinary. Gabriel has exhibited in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Baltimore, MD, Washington DC and Paris, France. His work is included in the permanent collection of the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, MD.

The gallery received state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

For more information about the exhibit at HACC, please contact Shawn Williams at 717-780-2478 or smwillia@hacc.edu.

‘Perceiving Emptiness’ Exhibit Features Artwork with Human Hair

“Perceiving Emptiness” by internationally known artist Jayoung Yoon will be displayed in the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, from Feb. 20 to March 17, 2023. The public is invited to a free lecture by the artist on March 2 at 6 p.m. in room 214 of Whitaker Hall on HACC’s Harrisburg Campus. A reception will follow the lecture at the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery.

The work of Yoon, a New York-based artist born in South Korea, draws upon the mind-matter phenomenon, exploring memory, perception and bodily sensations. The primary medium in her work is human hair, a material that is intimately corporeal, tactile and focuses the viewer’s attention on the body.

Yoon’s work has been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries and has appeared in various publications.

For more information about the exhibit, please contact Shawn Williams at (717)780-2478 or smwillia@hacc.edu.
