HACC Extends Remote Classes and Services through the Summer 2021 Semester

HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, will extend its mostly remote online instruction and student services through the summer 2021 semester. The exception will be hands-on/experiential components of approved programs.

We will continue operating as we did in our fall 2020 semester:

  • The College will remain open.

  • HACC’s campuses will remain closed until Aug. 12, 2020.

  • Classes will be taught online through remote instruction and virtual learning.

  • Student services will continue to be offered remotely.

  • Only credit and Workforce Development programs with required hands-on/experiential components to meet learning outcomes will be permitted to hold on-campus classes. In these cases, class size may be limited and personal protective equipment (PPE) and social distancing guidelines from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) must be followed.

  • Only essential employees involved in the programs that are approved to be on campus may return to campus.

  • This is subject to change at the direction of the Cabinet or by state mandate.

These decisions were made while keeping your safety and well-being in mind.

Please visit hacc.edu/Coronavirus for more details on our spring and summer semester plans and supports to help you continue to succeed at HACC.

Once we have courses approved to hold on-campus classes listed for the summer 2021 semester, the website will be updated accordingly.

How will HACC Handle Weather Announcements During COVID-19?

If there is a weather announcement regarding campus closures, it will only affect employees and students approved to be on campus. All other remote work, remote instruction and virtual learning courses will continue as scheduled.

We will communicate directly to students and employees approved to be on a HACC campus. Therefore, we will not be distributing a collegewide e2Campus message. In addition, we will not notify the local media.

Instead, we will:

· Update the hacc.edu website

· Send an email to employees who are approved to be on campus

· Send an email to students who are approved to be on campus

· Post an announcement to the collegewide Facebook and Twitter accounts

Please see the “Weather Announcement Process During COVID-19” tab on hacc.edu/Weather for more information. Also, please remember to continue wearing your mask, washing your hands and staying safe and healthy. You are important!

One College, One SGA

The Student Government Association (SGA) proudly serves HACC’s student body to bring students’ voice to the administration and provide academic success and leadership programming to the student body. As the College continues the good work of the reorganization, so does SGA.

Please take a moment to learn more about our student leaders’ great work:

Officers - Due to the remote environment and the College’s reorganization, the campus SGAs are functioning as one unit. The list of officers follows:

o SGA Gettysburg Campus President, Chloe Knill, cdknill1@hacc.edu

o SGA Harrisburg Campus President, Rachel Fleagle, rmfleag1@hacc.edu (Fall 2020) and Conrad Zimmerman (Spring 2021)

o SGA Lancaster Campus President, Makaela Moatts, mjmoatt1@hacc.edu

o SGA York Campus President, Andrea Flynn, akflynn1@hacc.edu

o SGA Vice President, Chloe Buckwalter, cbuckw1@hacc.edu

o SGA Treasurer, Fatima Asghar

o SGA Secretary, Abagail Robillard, afrobil1@hacc.edu

One College SGA Constitution and Bylaws - All officers have worked diligently throughout the fall semester to create a new constitution and bylaws that mirror the efforts of the One-College reorganization. Currently, these documents are under editorial review and will be presented to students and all shared governance groups in February 2021. This process has been challenging, but the leadership has risen to the task and provided very comprehensive documents.

Clubs - Chloe Buckwalter, SGA vice president, has chaired a committee to update club forms and the advisor manual to reflect the new bylaws. The committee held an advisor and officer meeting in early November 2020 and recorded this event to share with anyone who could not attend. This committee is also preparing for a spring Advisor/Officer Roundtable in early February 2021. Please reach out to Chloe Buckwalter with any questions.

SGA Hangouts – The SGA recognizes that students need an informal space to connect with fellow students. Starting in January 2021, SGA will host Zoom sessions by students for students to chat, ask questions and engage with clubs and programs. Conrad Zimmerman will be leading this endeavor. Please contact Wendy Brubaker at wabrubak@hacc.edu with any questions.

Senators and Volunteers – Throughout the fall semester, returning senators and volunteers have been reappointed to their roles. SGA is currently looking for interested students who would like to know more about these roles and privileges. Please reach out to wabrubak@hacc.edu with any inquires.

Elections – In March 2021, the SGA will hold a new process for elections. Three elected officers, known as the Advisory Council, will oversee the collegewide SGA, alongside campus executive vice presidents. There will continue to be campus-based SGA officers to listen to and represent the students at those campuses. Each campus will collaborate with the Advisory Council continuously to provide inclusive and equitable representation and programming collegewide. If you are interested in learning more about the SGA reorganization and open positions, please watch for a collegewide email for SGA forums to be held in mid-February 2021.

Committees

o Scholarship Committee - This SGA committee is working to evaluate campus SGA scholarships and ensure that each campus is represented.

o Student Involvement Fair Committee - Another committee is collaborating to provide asynchronous and synchronous programming for the Spring 2021 Virtual Student Involvement Fair. Please mark your calendars and watch for more details coming soon for this great event being held Feb. 10, 2021.

o Ethics Committee – A collegewide SGA Ethics Committee has formed and is receiving training to guide the SGA according to the current SGA constitution and campus bylaws.

o Forms – The SGA Forms Committee is working on a new Cognito form to streamline their election application process and collaborating between campuses to streamline processes and forms. Due to the remote environment, this has challenged SGA leadership to evaluate the necessity of certain forms and align all forms with the requirements of the new constitution and bylaws.

HACC’s SGA has demonstrated professionalism, time management, organization, inclusivity, equity and compassion during the last semester. All leaders within SGA have recognized the challenges that each student and employee is facing during this time and worked to ensure that their decisions reflect the best interests of the students. We thank and congratulate all SGA officers, senators and volunteers for their continued hard work.

If you are interested in getting involved in the SGA or want to learn more, please reach out to Wendy Brubaker at wabrubak@hacc.edu or Gina Crance at gcrance@hacc.edu.

Community Health Worker Program Debuts in 2021!

Are you interested in helping others navigate our complex healthcare system? Do you gain personal satisfaction from making a difference in others’ lives? If you answered “yes” to even one of those questions, we have a new program that may be right up your alley!

HACC is excited to announce a Community Health Worker Program that prepares you to become a certified community health worker (C-CHW). A C-CHW is a trusted individual who contributes to improved health outcomes in the community.

They:

· Serve the communities in which they reside or communities with which they may share ethnicity, language, socioeconomic status or life experiences

· Build individual and community capacity by increasing health knowledge and self-sufficiency through a range of activities such as outreach, community education, informal counseling, social support and advocacy

· Advocate for individual and community health

The term “community health worker” includes, but is not limited to, other titles such as outreach worker, patient navigator and promotores de salud. HACC’s 120-hour, part-time program will be offered online and via Zoom beginning in early 2021.

Lamont J. Tubbs, MPP, BS, C-CHW, joined HACC to assist with the development and instruction of the CHW program. Lamont is a certified community health worker with Cincinnati Children's Hospital in the social services division of general pediatrics. As a CHW, Lamont participates as a member of a multidisciplinary team and assists with the coordination of care including medical and social service needs and goals for mostly marginalized families in low-income communities. In addition to his community health work, Lamont is a nine-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served as Hospital Corpsman and served seven years as a firefighter/paramedic for Colerain Township in the Greater Cincinnati region. Lamont’s dedication to empowering, caring and advocating for families creates avenues for change in future healthcare practices. Lamont holds a master’s degree in public policy and social issues and a bachelor’s degree in emergency services management from Union Institute and University.

If you would like information about HACC’s Community Health Worker Program, please contact Nina Kottcamp at nmkottca@hacc.edu or 717-221-1386.

Explore the World by Getting to Know HACC’s English Language Learners

Are you interested in learning a second language and exploring new cultures? Have you noticed that another student in one of your classes is new to the area? Each year, HACC welcomes well over 200 students from more than 50 countries. It is an honor that these brave newcomers to the United States have left behind their families, friends and first languages to make HACC their home. Unfortunately, life can be lonely for these international visitors as most do not have many U.S. contacts.

Even though you and your classmates from other countries might speak with different accents, you’d be surprised to learn how much you have in common. Multilingual friends can also be excellent teachers, and exchanging languages and cultures could open your perspectives on the world and be mutually beneficial for you. Please consider saying Hola, Bonjour, Olá and Ni Hao to someone today!

Meet Kouassi: ESL and GED Prep Program Participant

“I knew this program would help me get a better job, enrich my knowledge, help me interact with students and teachers and prepare me for the bigger purpose. I graduated with my GED, and now I am going to college at Penn State Harrisburg with Computer Science as a major.”

Student Spotlight: Naia Reaves, English Major

Naia Reves recently changed her major to English after learning about the career opportunities for someone with strong writing skills. She says, “English was always one of my favorite subjects. I just never thought I could make a career from just that alone.”

Naia currently works full-time in a remote capacity for an insurance company and states that she came to HACC for the convenience, flexibility and affordability She appreciates the remote and virtual options available to her and notes that she finds balance in her life as both an employee and student by using specific strategies: “I plan the week ahead: Study time, work, laundry, etc. and leave two hours open every day just for myself . . . Use that time to do whatever you want!”

In that free time, Naia likes to listen to music, sing karaoke, play word finds, go bowling, play trivia and keep up on current events. She also tends to what she calls her “low maintenance pets,” plants and fish.

In the future, Naia hopes to find a lucrative career that leverages her communication skills and plans to use what she learns at HACC to help her get there.

HACC’s Executive Chef Publishes Cookbook

As the old saying goes, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Chef Thomas J. Long, CEC, AAC, executive chef at HACC, has made lemonade and so much more.

While the Chef’s Apprentice restaurant on HACC’s Harrisburg Campus remains closed due to the global pandemic, Chef Tom has been hosting cooking shows for students on Zoom. Documenting recipes from the show became part of the process, and one viewer suggested the creation of a cookbook.

The Chef’s Apprentice Cookbook – available for purchase just in time for the holidays – features over 80 recipes, including appetizers, soups, entrees, salads, side dishes and desserts. Some of Chef Tom’s prize-winning recipes from over the years are also included, such as his often requested crab cake recipe.

Please visit the HACC Bookstore website to purchase yours!

Five dollars from the sale of each cookbook will be donated to the HACC Foundation’s Benjamin Olewine III Center for the Study of Culinary Arts and Food Service Management Fund for Excellence. This fund for excellence allows HACC to invest in innovative tools and technology to keep up with the constantly expanding culinary industry.
