Succeeding in college mathematics involves strategic learning and personal growth. Here are key tips to excel in your math courses.
Attend Classes Regularly
Being present in class is essential. Active participation and attentive listening help in understanding complex concepts.
Review Notes Promptly
Review your notes the same day after class. Address areas needing clarification in the next session. Staying current is crucial as math concepts build on each other.
Study Math Daily
Dedicate time each day to studying math. Engage deeply with the material beyond homework by reading and reflecting on it. Aim for three hours of study per week for each hour of class.
Consistent Review
Regularly review past problems and topics to reinforce understanding and avoid forgetting foundational principles.
Effective Problem-Solving
When solving problems, explore all possible solutions and document your process. Compare your attempts with correct solutions to identify and learn from mistakes.
Syllabus Awareness
Review the syllabus at the start of the semester to understand course policies, test schedules, and assignments, keeping you organized and prepared.
Prepare for Classes
Preview textbook chapters and review previous notes before each class. This preparation improves understanding and engagement with new material.
Engage in Class
Ask questions about homework or the day's material to solidify your understanding and foster a collaborative learning environment.
Utilize Office Hours
Regularly attend your professor’s office hours for personalized assistance and a deeper understanding of concepts.
Seek Additional Support
Use the Tutoring Center for extra help, especially for challenging math courses.
Review Your Work
Always review your work after completing it to catch mistakes and strengthen your grasp of the material.
Show Respect
Maintain respect for classmates and professors to foster a positive learning environment.
By incorporating these strategies, you can enhance your college mathematics experience and achieve academic success through smart and strategic learning approaches.

Did you file a Certificate of Residence (COR) for classes last year or in the past? It has to be renewed annually. Students must request a new COR from the school district in which they reside to continue getting the discounted tuition. If you haven’t filed one before, keep reading.
HACC has an agreement with 22 school districts to provide discounted tuition to students living within their district. These school districts have agreed to pay a portion of your tuition if you have lived in their school district for at least a year- even if you did not attend high school in that area. All you have to do to receive the discounted tuition rate is to work with the school district to prove your residency by submitting a valid Certificate of Residence. Please note, students already paying reduced Dual Enrollment (DE) and/or College in the High School (CHS) rates are not eligible. To learn more about getting this discount for your fall, winter, spring and summer classes:
Click here to find out whether or not your school is a participating school district.
If your school district is listed, follow the instructions to complete and submit the Certificate of Residence application or call the phone number listed under your school district to get instructions from your district's representative.
Confirm that the credit has been applied to your bill. There will be a waiting period to allow for processing between submitting your application and HACC receiving it. Once your application is processed, the credit will appear on your bill. Questions can be directed to the One Stop Welcome Center.
Renew your Certificate of Residence annually. Mark your calendar - repeat the process after July 1 each year.
Do you remember your first semester at HACC? Were you nervous or overwhelmed? Do you want to help students turn their nerves into excitement and energy? Are you excited to share your story and what you have learned? Would you like to do all of this and develop your leadership skills, make new friends, and get involved with the HACC community?
Learn why Orientation Leader and recent HACC graduate McKenzie Hall loved working with the NSO team:
“Being a student worker for the New Student Orientation team has helped me build interpersonal skills and leadership qualities. The greatest gift I received from the NSO team was their amazing support and encouragement throughout my educational journey. The flexibility of the job made it easy to find the balance between work life and school life. It was a pleasure meeting and working with Nakia, Ayelet, and Jenny as well as the other departments here at HACC, and the students that I had the opportunity to mentor.”
