It is our pleasure to announce Dr. Myles Miller as the new vice chair of the HACC Foundation Board.
Dr. Miller loves HACC and will help lead the HACC Foundation Board to success. Please join us in congratulating him on his new role.
Beloved philanthropists and HACC supporters, Dr. Rukhsana Rahman and Mr. Athar Rafiq, shared with us why they give to the HACC Foundation.
1. What are your current (or former) job title and employer name?
Dr. Rahman: retired radiologist from Gettysburg Hospital
Mr. Rafiq: assistant professor of cyber security Mt. Saint Mary’s University
2. How did you become affiliated with the College?
Athar volunteered for HACC’s Gettysburg Campus as it was first expanding and relocating to its current site. Our son, Zuhair, attended HACC for his first few years of college courses.
3. What inspires you to give to HACC?
We have experienced the benefits of a local community college campus presence for our own family and friends’ children’s education. Our initial assistance was directly to students who contacted us through friends and family as well as being invited as speakers to a variety of events. We have had a variety of rich collaboration experiences with faculty and staff, ranging from donation of books for Africa by faculty to nursing student volunteers at the local Heritage Festival.
4. What do you hope your gift will accomplish?
Our objectives are frequently shaped by our own experiences and historical events. Today, the average student at HACC is probably facing numerous challenges, and we hope to support their ability to survive a short-term crisis with direct cash intervention. That is even more important today than ever before.
5. Why should others give to HACC?
It is an investment with invaluable return on investment. For each student who succeeds at HACC, society gains at many different levels from their increased earning potential. They are engaged members of society paying taxes, and their children have a higher probability of completing higher education.
6. If you were to designate a contribution to the HACC Foundation in your last will and testament, what type of lasting impact would you want your contribution to have?
We would want to increase all forms of short-term immediate impact and not have any of the funds sitting in long-term endowments. Too many institutions are sitting on massive endowments when there is such a dire need in community college education. This is our personal feedback of the current endowment model for higher educational institutions such as HACC.
7. What part of philanthropy gives you the most joy?
The success of an individual that resulted from a single or a few financial grants combined with individual mentoring.
We appreciate the dedication, compassion and empathy that Dr. Rahman and Mr. Rafiq have shown as they continue to support HACC’s students.

A beloved HACC professor emerita, Mrs. Julia Goodrich-Benbow, passed away in July 2021 at the age of 76.
Per her obituary, “Julie became one of the first professors at the new campus of Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC).” “For 30 years Julie opened the minds of her students to analytical thinking, teaching them the critical thinking skills she so deeply valued herself. She always believed in her students, encouraging them to believe in themselves and helping them to turn a poor grade into a good one. Many of her students cherished her.”
We remain grateful that Professor Goodrich-Benbow impacted the lives of many HACC students.
May Professor Goodrich-Benbow rest in peace as her memory lives on.
HACC is looking for high-performing professionals ready to serve and transform the lives of students.
