All persons under 18 are required by state law to attend school unless they have graduated from high school. All students attending a public school are required to spend 30 hours per week in school or school-sponsored activities. To obtain a waiver of this requirement, the student must qualify for at least one of the following reasons:
Employment (Seniors only)
Early admission in an institution of higher learning
Medical reason
Other verified reason agreed upon by parent and principal
Year courses award 1.00 credit at the end of the year; 0.50 credit cannot be earned for semester work in a year course. Semester courses award 0.50 credit per semester. See course descriptions for credit details.
Acceleration and remedial credit opportunities exist through various approved programs. The student and their family are responsible for all extra credit and remedial/credit recovery costs. See your Counselor or Registrar for more information. Approved extra credit/credit recovery programs are:
DOE Summer School (i.e. Waiakea HS)

HAAS supports dual credit options. Through programs such as Running Start at Hawai‘i Community College and the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, high school sophomores, juniors and seniors can earn community college or university credit upon enrollment at the respective campuses. See your counselor for more information.
You may not repeat a course for credit except as noted in course descriptions. If a student repeats a non-repeatable course, the grade-point average is computed on the higher of the two final grades with no duplicate credit awarded.
Schedule changes are made for the following reasons:
Incomplete schedule or registration error.
Course already taken, not repeatable.
Incorrect level placement
Adjustment for part-time work.
Medical reason
Senior requirement for graduation
Summer school attendance
Failure to meet course prerequisites
Students who fail to register by the deadline will be programmed by the registrar and forfeit their ability to request schedule changes.
All credit requirements and financial obligations need to be met prior to commencement date.
