The Study of Year 10 Music Performance is designed for students wishing to continue with their musical studies, and as a useful precursor to VCE Music Performance Unit 1 and 2. It caters for students who play in classical, contemporary or jazz styles.
Students specialise in developing their skills in solo and or group performance. They also learn theory and listening skills with the goal of improving their musicianship. Contemporary skills such as multitrack recording and online promotion are included so that students graduate ready to grasp opportunities in modern society.
A prerequisite for this subject is that you must be undertaking, or intend to commence instrumental lessons; either privately or through the School Instrumental Program.
Students prepare for and attend a professional performance which is examined critically. Details about this excursion are only available closer to the date but the cost (possibly around $60) for this is additional. A consent form agreeing to this payment must be collected from the Middle School office and completed before selecting the subject.

This course is designed to make you a better musician. All of the skills taught come back to making you better at playing music.
What do you study in Year 10 Music Performance?
Lots of performance skills, both solo and in a group. The theory and aural skills that you learn help increase your knowledge so that you become a better musician. The technology skills, like recording and promotion, allow you to share your musical skills more effectively in the 21st century.
Do I need to be a certain standard?
The short answer is no, but if you intend to follow these studies through to VCE, you should speak with your Instrumental Music Teacher or Music Coordinator to discuss this issue.
Is it hard?
Not if you keep up to date with tasks and are prepared to put in regular practice on your instrument.
Are there any pre requisites?
Students should be currently playing a musical instrument and have a working knowledge of musical notation. If you are not taking music lessons on your instrument you should be prepared to start this (either at school or privately is fine)
What sort of student is attracted to this subject?
Students who are learning a Musical Instrument find it very worthwhile gaining credit for something they really enjoy. Students who benefit from a creative subject in their academic load.
Are there any associated costs?
You must be having lessons on your instrument - either privately or through school. We often take the class on an excursion to a professional orchestra or musical theatre show, the cost could be $60 or above.
Do we get to go on any excursions, or are there any guest speakers or performances?

Is there a lot of practical work or is the subject mainly theory based?
There are components of both. The written area covers some theory, listening, aural, composition and technology work. All of these areas are designed to make you a better musician.
Does it benefit any VCE Unit 3 and 4 subject I wish to take?
It is really a very useful step in preparing for VCE Music Performance Units 1 & 2 and Music Performance Units 3 & 4.
