Working Toward Success With Classroom Guidance!
Check out the Blog page for photos and summaries of current classroom lessons!!
Although our days at Merrywood are very busy, it is always a pleasure to be able to work with all students during whole group guidance. When we are feeling happy, healthy, and following school-wide rules, we are all better learners!
Our kindergarten classrooms have the opportunity to learn about making and keeping friends and identifying the behaviors we look for in a good friend. We will learn about personal space, and how we can work together safely when everyone respects our space. We will also talk about accepting differences and celebrating what makes us unique. Each child is truly one of a kind, and it is important that we all accept that being different is what makes life so enjoyable.
In first grade, we will work on staying focused, being good listeners, and learning how to share concerns without tattling. We will talk about the importance of using kind words and how to solve problems with one another. We will also learn about showing respect at home and at school.
Our second and third grade students will work on handling teasing, bullying, and other unkind behaviors. We will also work on ways to make things better - stick together, be helpful, get help when needed, and reach out to others with kindness.
In fourth and fifth grade, we continue to address bullying behaviors, anti-bullying strategies, and the importance of making wise choices. We continue to build our conflict resolution skills and focus on social decision making as we prepare for the transition to Middle School.
All children benefit from learning skills that help them become successful learners, effective communicators, creative problem-solvers, and responsible citizens. It is our hope at Merrywood Elementary School that classroom guidance programs can provide support for our children's goals!
