This year in Social Studies, we’ll take a trip around the world. We’ll explore mountains and cross deserts as we learn to read maps and discover what makes us the same, and sometimes different, than other people. In the process, we’ll learn to determine cause and effect and support our opinions with details and facts.
In accordance with District policy, grades will be weighted as follows:
Tests/Projects 35%
Quizzes 25%
Homework 10%
Daily Grades 30%
Tests will be given on material covered in class and in assigned readings. Notice will be given prior to each test. Additionally, monthly Gimkit Challenges will count as tests.
Quizzes will be given on class notes, vocabulary, maps, warm ups and chapter sections.
Projects will be assigned throughout the year to allow students to develop their research skills and express their creativity. Specific details will be provided for each assignment.
Homework will usually consist of a study guide, which students will be given at the beginning of the unit.
In-class work will be graded to make up the Daily Grade.
All late assignments will receive partial credit. Tutoring is available in the Media Center at 7:15 am and you will be able to monitor your child’s grades in real time by signing up for Parent Portal in the Guidance Office.
Please remember that only grades published in PowerSchool are the official grades. Grades posted in Classroom are not calculated according to District policy.
About Me: This is my 15th year teaching Social Studies at Northside Middle School. And, while I'm sure this year will be a little bit different, I think it will be a great year.
My undergraduate degree is in Psychology, with a minor in Sociology. I also have a master's degree in Heritage Presentation, with a concentration in Folklore.
I have two sons. Both are 28. Both went through Northside. Both are college graduates. (One went to Clemson and the other went to Georgetown. Don't worry Gamecock fans. My dad went to Carolina.) One just finished his master's and the other will begin graduate work in January. One is an engineer and the other is an actor. Both got married last year and you can see pictures of them in my classroom.
I have a dog that is new to me, but not new to the world. She was thrown out of a moving car and now lives with me. Her name is Mae, and there will probably be pictures of her in the room as well.
