There is zero tolerance for any form of academic dishonesty, including cheating, helping others to cheat, falsification of data, or plagiarism. However, I enthusiastically encourage you to work together in this class on many activities. If you are wondering about whether or not something would be considered cheating, please please please ask me! Let’s decide together. I know you want to truly learn the content of this class, and “grades” tend to be the way we’ve always quantified someone’s learning. But I want your grade to accurately reflect your learning, and if you don’t do your own work, then this won’t happen. So let’s be really clear and open about this part of our class.
Please know-- if you submit chat GPT or other forms of AI content generation and claim it as your own, that is a form of academic dishonesty. This doesn’t further your learning.
(Now...I do have to include the following information in my syllabus, for legal reasons. But please know that I trust you and am confident in your success this semester.)
Golden West College has the responsibility to ensure that grades assigned are indicative of the knowledge and skill level of each student. Acts of academic dishonesty make it impossible to fulfill this responsibility. Faculty have a responsibility to ensure that academic honesty is maintained in their classroom. Students share that responsibility and are expected to refrain from all acts of academic dishonesty. The Student Code of Conduct, Board Policy and Administrative Procedures 5500, shall be applied to all incidents of academic dishonesty.
If faculty believes a student is responsible for Academic Misconduct, they should submit an Incident Report. The College Disciplinary Officer (CDO) will follow-up with a letter to the student that a report alleging Academic Misconduct has been received. The student will be given the opportunity to meet with the CDO to discuss the allegations. If the student does not take the opportunity to discuss the allegations then the automatic sanctions will be to write a reflective essay and complete an academic integrity tutorial. Faculty will be copied on this correspondence with the student. Faculty may also assign a 0 or F for the assignment or exam where the student committed Academic Misconduct. A second report of Academic Misconduct will likely result in suspension from all Coast Community College District colleges.
While the use of Artificially Intelligent (“AI”) chatbots, such as ChatGPT, may be permitted to some degree in this course, the two most important things to remember are:
Students must always cite when and where they have used AI in their work.
Student submissions must be their own original work.
Here are some guidelines of what a student may or may not use AI for in the course:
Students MAY use AI to help
give suggestions for proper grammar or improving writing
organize their work and suggestions for answering questions
create an outline or summary of their work
with research
determine where to expand on ideas or strengthen arguments
Students MAY NOT
submit assignments that are primarily written by AI;
use AI generated content in any way in the following assignments: exams, case studies
submit AI generated summaries or outlines as their own;
fail to properly cite where and how they used AI.
Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) coordinates all academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities at Golden West College. If you have, or think you might have, a disability that impacts your educational experience in this class, please contact DSPS to determine your eligibility for accommodations.

You can designate pronouns to follow your name in Canvas. If you're interested in learning more about why you might do this, here's a helpful resource describing why pronouns matter. Reflecting on the power of inclusive and gender-neutral language is important for all of us, but it is especially important for those of us going into future careers that involve helping humans, such as healthcare. It is easy to designate your pronouns in Canvas:
1. Log into Canvas.
2. Click on Account (top left menu bar thing).
3. Choose Settings from the options that appear.
4. Click on Edit Settings (to the right).
5. One of the new options in the Settings is a pronoun option dropdown.
