Walk Two Moons Unit

Welcome to the Walk Two Moons Webquest! After reading this book, you are going along on the epic road trip that Salamanca Tree Hiddle takes with her grandparents. Throughout this virtual journey, you will be experiencing the trip that Sal took, looking at pictures, videos, and text which represent her different stops. The webquest should help you to identify the important theme of family that is prevalent throughout the text. Sal went on the trip with family, experiences hardships with her family, and learns to love her family all the more.

Fictional - Bybanks Kentucky

This is Sal's original home town. Sal lived here the first 13 years of her life. Kentucky overall is known for the horse racing, collage basketball, and the famous Kentucky fried chicken.

When Sal lived in Bybanks, Kentucky, she was so happy and loves it. The farm she lived on is so magical and she loved to live on the farm. When her mother leaves Sal becomes sad and she and her father move. The most important plot feature in Bybanks is when her mom's baby dies and soon after that her mom leave her and her father.

Stop 1 - Euclid, OH

Welcome to Euclid, OH! Sal's grandparents picked her up from Euclid, OH to start off their road trip west to find Sal's mother. Throughout this trip Sal bonds with her grandparents and learns a lot about herself and the truth about her mother. Euclid is the place her father moved them after her mother left. Stop 2 - Elkhart, IN

Welcome to Elkhart, IN! Sal and her grandparents stopped for lunch in Elkhart after a long morning of driving. Learn more about this historic small town.

Stop 3 - South Bend, IN

Welcome to South Bend, IN! South Bend is a bustling small town in the heart of America. It is one of the many stops Sal made on her road trip. Each place was new and probably slightly scary because of this. Go to the Visit South Bend website:

Stop 5 - Chicago, IL

Welcome to Chicago, IL! Go to the ChicagoKids.com website. Under the “Places To Go” tab you will find a list of fun activities to do in Chicago. Sal might not have done any of these fun things because she only spent a short amount of time in Chicago.

If she had to choose though, which one of the fun activities under this tab would Sal have wanted to do with her grandparents? Give your answer and explain why (in a paragraph) she would have picked that activity.

Stop 6 - Madison, WI

Welcome to Madison, WI! Visit this website that includes 10 interesting facts about Madison, Wisconsin. Read about the 10 facts and then write your top four favorite facts. Write the facts in complete sentences.

Stop 7 - Wisconsin Dells, WI

Welcome to Wisconsin Dells, WI! Go to the following website. You will find pictures of headdresses likes the one Gram wore while dancing with Indians at the fort. After looking at these photos, draw a picture of what Gram’s headdress might have looked like. Do this on a separate piece of paper. Write 2-3 sentences in the comments describing what Sal thought when she saw her Gram dancing. Should Sal have been worried about her Gram? Does this make her a good granddaughter?

Stop 8 - Pipestone, MN

Welcome to Pipestone, MN! Go to the following Pipestone National Monument website. Read the information in this section.

List the reasons given for pipe smoking. Answer the following questions with 2-3 sentences each. Which of these reasons is closest to why Sal and her grandparents smoked a peace pipe? Is this activity one that a family should be doing?

Stop 9 - Sioux Falls, SD

Welcome to Sioux Falls, SD! Sioux Falls is one of the many small towns that Sal and her grandparents stop in during their road trip. This town has many exciting activities for families to do. Go to the Visit Sioux Falls website, under the “Things To Do” tab at the top of the page, choose the “Falls Park” sub-tab.

If you were traveling with Sal, which one of these activities would you like to do? Pretend that you are Sal’s sister. Write 3-4 sentences about what you would like to do in Sioux Falls with your sister. Write 2-3 sentences about whether you think Sal would be a good sister.

Stop 10 - Mitchell, SD

Welcome to Mitchell, SD! Mitchell was another small town that Sal and her grandparents passed through. They probably saw the famous Corn Palace, a well-known tourist attraction. Go to the Corn Palace History website and read the summary of the history of the Corn Palace. Think of a few local monuments in your town. Write 4-5 sentences about this monument or tourist attraction. Describe what it looks like, the times you have visited it, history of it, etc. Does this monument or attraction have any significance to your family?

Stop 11 - Chamberlain, SD

Welcome to Chamberlain, SD! Chamberlain is a beautiful town which Sal’s family passed through on the way to Lewiston, ID. Go to the Chamberlain website, it many fun activities for families.

On a separate piece of paper draw a picture of Sal and her grandparents enjoying one of these activities and write 2-3 sentences describing your drawing. With a partner write 2-3 additional sentences discussing why it is important for families to do activities together.

Stop 12 - Missouri River

Welcome to the Missouri River! Go to this website which discusses the difference between harmless water snakes and venomous Water Moccasins!

Gram got bitten by a poisonous Water Moccasin in the Missouri River. Describe at least THREE big differences between a harmless water snake and a venomous Water Moccasin!

Stop 13 - Badlands National Park

Welcome to Badlands National Park! Visit the Badlands website and complete this task!

Read the "Things to Do" section and recommend to you classmates 3 activities that are most interesting to you.

Stop 14 - Mt. Rushmore National Memorial

Welcome to Mount Rushmore National Memorial! Mount Rushmore is a common tourist attraction for many American citizens, not just for Sal and her family. Families from all over the world come to see the presidents' faces carved into stone. Look at the photograph of Mt. Rushmore and imagine you were there on a long road trip out west.

4. If you could choose any person to be the fifth individual honored, who would it be and why?

Stop 15 - Yellowstone National Park

Welcome to Yellowstone National Park! The final stop on the road trip before Sal went to the place of her mother's accident. Gram wanted to stop and see Old Faithful. She had never seen this majestic sight and felt her energy waning. Watch this video of the Old Faithful Geyser erupting.
