Maya was a 14-year-old student in the eighth grade. She was kind and smart, but she had one big problem: she was not confident about her looks. Every morning, Maya looked in the mirror and felt sad. She thought her skin was too dull and her eyes were not bright enough.
"I want to be beautiful like the girls on social media," Maya whispered to herself.
One day, Maya decided to buy a lot of makeup. She bought foundation, bright lipstick, and heavy eyeliner. She spent two hours in front of the mirror before school. When she finished, her face looked completely different. She felt like a different person behind the "mask" of makeup.
At school, her best friend, Sarah, was surprised. Maya asked for her opinion. "What do you think, Sarah? Do I look better now?"
Sarah looked at Maya carefully. "In my opinion," Sarah said gently, "you are always beautiful, Maya. But honestly, I think you are wearing too much makeup. It hides your real smile."
Maya felt confused. "But I feel more powerful with this on my face," she argued.
Then, they met their art teacher, Ms. Nina. Maya asked her the same question. Ms. Nina smiled and said, "From my point of view, makeup is a tool for art, not a way to hide who you are. I believe that true confidence comes from how you treat others and yourself, not from a bottle of foundation."
Maya went to the restroom and looked at herself again. She realized that her friends and teachers liked her for her personality, not her makeup. She took a tissue and wiped away the heavy layers. She kept a little bit of lip gloss because she liked the shine, but she let her real skin breathe.
Maya finally understood that beauty is about being comfortable in your own skin. She walked back to class with a real smile, feeling more confident than ever before.
