The English curriculum at Gurnard is based on the use of quality text drivers and provides the skills and knowledge that children need to create and refine fluent pieces of writing. Our intentions in writing are for children to; write for a purpose, see themselves as real writers, take ownership of their writing, see writing as an interesting and enjoyable process and acquire the ability to organise and plan their written work.
Each year group has carefully chosen quality core texts (including fiction, non-fiction, films and images) which act as the stimulus to teach pupils to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others. Having engaging and challenging core texts allows pupils to develop a love for literature and writing for enjoyment. We believe that along with reading, speaking and listening, writing makes a significant contribution to the development of children as thinkers and learners. It is our aim that all pupils develop their writing ability and enjoy the process of cultivating this lifelong skill.
The long term overviews below show the key texts used as drivers for writing in each Year Group. Teachers in each year group are responsible for creating learning journeys or sequences for each text following the long term plans. These learning journeys will focus on the key grammar skills for each year group along with cohort dependent needs.
