Gunnison High School

Students at Gunnison High School participated in the Zero Water Day Partnership guided learning plan, collaborated with the 7th grade science class to provide feedback on the design of interpretative signs at a nearby recreational path, and participated in the  #mountainsmatter campaign. Students are empowered to play an active role in community education and outreach, especially as it pertains to vital riparian and water ecoystems at the headwaters of the Colorado River.  Our Environmental Science Class also affords students the opportunity to do stream data analysis through an EPA grant program out of Arizona State University: SCAPE (Sustainable Communities and Place Based Education) and presented their research in the Healthy Rivers Youth Water Summit

Sustainable Developement Goals

SDG Class Card Sort 2021 Spring (STORED)

GHS Class Card Sort Spring 2021:

Students organized the 17 sutainable development goals in the order they thought most appropriate for action. Students discussed that the order does not mean one card is more important than the other, but that action must be taken in appropriate steps to achieve the sustainability goals. Emphasis was placed on partnership and access to basic neccessities. Students added Mental Health and Affordable College to the goals.

Field Experience:

In partnership with SCAPE, Arizona State University, Telluride Institute, Colorado Parks and Wildlife Tomichi Creek State Wildlife Area, and  Western Colorado University Student Volunteers, with suport from Wild Rose Education students collect and analyze annual data on streamflow, water chemsistry, macroinvertebrates, and riparian transects to tell a story of Tomichi Creek, a tributary to the Gunnison River.

Pollinator Garden:

In collaboration with GHS Biology Classes, students broke ground on a polllinator garden at GHS. We hope to create a pollinator path that connects our school to the middle school and then the water walk!
