Good Morning!
Today’s Tech Tuesday is about extensions for Chrome. Extensions are small software programs that can modify and enhance the functionality of the Chrome browser.
There are LOTS of them out there. Here are a few of my favorites! There are plenty to find! Don’t confuse these with add ons. We’ll look at add ons in a later Tech Tuesday.
1. Draftback – This extension is one for TEACHERS only! Don’t let your kids know that you have this extension! With this extension, you can see ALL the drafts of any doc – even if they were shared by someone else. Now you can see in a matter of seconds, a video of all the various drafts of a paper. This extension calls itself the archaeology of great writing!
2. Grammarly – This extension is helpful for all! Your spelling and grammar are checked while writing.
3. Quiettube – If you show a lot of YouTube videos, this may be a helpful extension. You can take any YouTube video, open it with Quiettube and you will have the video without all the comments, ads, etc.
4. Save to Google Drive – This extension will automatically save items to your Google Drive.
5. Talking Alarm Clock – No explanation needed. This alarm talks to you and you can customize the message.
6. Web Timer – This is an excellent extension for you personally. Do you ever wonder what you’re actually spending your time on when you are browsing the Internet? This extension will show you exactly how you spend your time!
7. Pocket (Chrome app) or Save to Pocket (Chrome extension) – Pocket is a great place to save Internet sites or articles to look at later. You’ll have to sign up for a free account and you can access these saved items later from any computer with Internet access!
8. Extensity – Do you have a lot of extensions? Really, you should have no more than 8 – 10 running at any time. If you have more like me, you can easily turn extensions on and off with just a quick click.
9. One Tab – When browsing the Internet, do you have a LOT of tabs open at any one time? I do! They may be slowing down your Internet browsing. One Tab puts all your open tabs into one tab, gives you a list to access, and cleans up your browser! Check it out!
10. Training for Google Apps – This extension was mentioned in an earlier email. This extension will give you short tutorials about just about any topic with Google. There are items on Drive, Calendar, Docs, and much, much more!
EXTRA: Vocaroo is a great website. Have your students use vocaroo to record an answer to a question you pose in class. They can email you the recording in a matter of minutes!! Have them title it with something that will catch your eye! You don’t have to grade them all – just the ones that catch your eye! Put a shortcut on your bookmarks bar!
To get extensions, watch this quick video. Or follow these steps:
i. Open Chrome.
ii. Go to the 3 horizontal bars in the top right side of the browser.
iii. Scroll to MORE TOOLS – EXTENSIONS.
iv. Type the extension you want in the search bar.
v. Click on ADD TO CHROME.
vi. Some extensions will have more boxes to click, but then your extensions will show up on the same bar as your URL Address bar.
