Some of you may have seen it! Google Cardboard! What is Google Cardboard? It’s a way to experience virtual reality in a simple, fun and affordable way!
First of all, you’ll need some Google Cardboard glasses. You can purchase 1 for $15 or 2 for $25 from Google. https://vr.google.com/cardboard/get-cardboard/ There are also many other virtual reality viewers for lower cost or even free. However, buyer beware. Some don’t have the same quality viewer and may not work as well. If you can find free ones online, you can get them and if they don’t work, you haven’t lost anything!
Once you have your Google Cardboard, you’ll need a phone. It can be any type of smartphone as long as it connects to the Internet (this can be wifi).. Download an app called GOOGLE STREET VIEW. Once you have Google Street View, you can search for anywhere in the world!! When you’ve searched for a place, there are usually many views of that place. You can choose the place and then choose the cardboard icon on the top of the page. Then the phone will go into 3D and you place the phone in the cardboard and view the photo through your Google Cardboard!
Now you can really be Ms. Frizzle and take your students to any place in the world!
Here is a VIDEO on getting the app and using Google Cardboard.
Lastly, you can even take your own 360° photos using the Streetview app. On the very bottom right on the homepage of the app, there is a little camera with a + sign. If you take your own photos, make sure to allow about 3 minutes and if people are going to be in the picture, they must stay still until all the photos are taken or you’ll have people without heads or lower bodies! VIDEO on creating your own photos!
I have a few Google Cardboards if you’d like to see them or try them. Also, there are a few in Crested Butte in the library and a few teachers have also purchased them.
