Teaching Digital Citizenship

There are many resources available for free for teaching digital citizenship. Whose job is it to teach Digital Citizenship? Well, it's EVERYONE'S JOB! We need to make sure and model good practices and mention them to students as we are doing this. It can be as simple as giving credit for places we get our information from and sharing this with students. However, as our students are increasingly digital, they need other resources to make them safe and responsible when using the Internet and digital devices. Teaching students to always log out of their accounts and creating strong passwords is also an easy and important thing to do.

Google has a new(ish) resource that is basically a video game to teach students some of the basics of digital citizenship. This resource can be shared via Google Classroom and students can work their way through the missions to learn these concepts. This resource is called Interland. Give it a try! My guess is that many students will want to play - even at home - once introduced to this site!

And while Google has this great new resource, it's still important to mention another WONDERFUL resource for digital citizenship. Common Sense Media has created a scope and sequence for all grades - K-12. You can find that resources HERE. This curriculum has short, ready-made lessons to use with ALL GRADES. You can download resources or use some of the activities on-line. Also, they have been adding new lessons to this curriculum! Check it out!
