OPTION 1 - This Option uses signing in to Google Chrome for Students! This is a good option to teach so bookmarks, extensions, etc. can be transferred when using different computers. Here are the benefits of signing into the Chrome Browser!
SIGNING IN
- Get laptops and sign in to account. (Optional - after you sign in to Chrome, you can click SIGN IN and you'll be into your account
- Go to 3 dots on top bar and go to SETTINGS.
- Click SIGN IN to CHROME.
- Click LINK DATA.
RESEARCHING
- Find information on your topic
- Highlight that information and click on the little light bulb - save to Google Keep. It will copy the information you have highlighted and also have the URL of the website and puts it in Google Keep. (SEE ABOVE)
- Keep doing this until you have a lot of information about your topic.
- You can also save pictures. Just find the image you want, right click on the image and choose SAVE TO GOOGLE KEEP. You may want to teach students to find the correct site and not just copy the image from a Google search.
SORTING YOUR NOTES
- You can add labels to your notes so that they are easy to find.
- You can change colors to your notes to make them easier to find.
- All notes are searchable!!!
- Want to add more info? Click in the Keep popover to type a title and details for your note. You can also add a label to organize your notes. For example, I can add a label with my research name to organize easily.
WRITING YOUR DOCUMENT/SLIDES PRESENTATION/ETC.
- Once you’re done researching, start writing your doc or creating your slide show.
- Open Google Docs, Slides, or whatever you are creating in Google.
- Click TOOLS - KEEP NOTEPAD and all your notes pop up - right in your document! Newest items are at the top.
- You can search for a note using the SEARCH icon. Right now, you don’t have the option to look at labels, but if you search the label name, you’ll see all the notes with that word in it - including the label! You can see the colors of your notes if you colored them.
- You can drag and drop a note right into your doc. However, we had students look at their notes and sift through the material and put information into their own words.
- You can even edit your notes right in the KEEP NOTEPAD.
ADDING A BIBLIOGRAPHY
- Adding a bibliography is easy! If you are in the younger grades, the URL is listed right in your notes and students just need to add to their papers.
- However, if you need, use EASYBIB. There is even a Google Docs addon to easily help you add your bibliography.
- Use EXPLORE under TOOLS to access this tool!
- You can copy and paste a quote, then hit the QUOTATION marks and you’ll have a footnote.
- Also, go to ADD-ONS and get Easy Bib and create a bibliography that way as well!

LOGGING OUT OF CHROME
- To log out of Chrome, just go back to SETTINGS and click SIGN OUT. Clear data.

Researching Using Google Keep and Docs or Slides - Option 1
OPTION 2 - Split Screen This Option allows for you to access this resource WITHOUT logging in to Google Chrome.
- Open Chrome -navigate to a website for research.
- Go to the 3 dots and click NEW WINDOW. Navigate to Google Keep.
- Now, make sure both windows are on the single box in the very top right.
- With one window, hold the windows key on the keyboard and click the right arrow key.
- With the 2nd window, do the same but use the left arrow with the windows key.
- Now you have a split screen to see both your Google Keep and a website for notes.
- Take your notes in Google Keep. However, once you open Google Docs or Slides, you can still use the TOOLS - KEEP NOTEPAD to see your notes.

To check for plagiarism:
- Highlight a line or two from the paper that seems suspect and copy this.
- Paste those lines into a google search box and if it’s been plagiarized, the site will come up with those exact words.
