**Please note: American University has not yet made a decision about in-person classes for the fall 2020 semester. The AU Gap Program however, will offer internships and seminars that are exclusively online for the fall semester. Commuter options available. **
Washington DC employers are increasingly turning to remote or remote/in person internships, this summer, fall and beyond. Students in the Washington Semester Program were recently featured in a Wall Street Journal article, The Keys to a Successful Work From Home Internship (note: full article is behind a paywall).
The college admission season has begun. Some students, especially those who applied Early Decision or Early Action, have heard already whether they were admitted. Others will be receiving offers of admission over the next couple of months. This is a very exciting time for college-bound seniors. However, with more and more colleges making offers of January admission, there are students who are not sure what to do in the fall semester before they actually enroll.
Some students work a job to save for college, others take the opportunity to travel. Some spend a semester in Washington DC doing an internship to try out a professional field.
The AU Gap Program allows spring admits to other colleges to gain experience through an internship in DC three full days a week while living on the American University campus and taking a college seminar in American Government. Internships are available in politics, journalism, business, tech, arts, social justice, environmental advocacy, sports management and more.
This past fall we hosted spring admits headed to Boston University, NYU, Colorado College, and University of Chicago. Now is time to apply for Fall 2020. We accept applications on a rolling basis through May 15 and students receive notification of admission to the program within two weeks.
In addition to the online application, applicants must submit the following supplemental items either electronically or via mail:
High school transcript(s)
A recommendation from your high school academic counselor or teacher
A recommendation from an extracurricular or community contact
Once the required documents are received, applications are submitted to the admissions committee for review and students may be contacted for a phone interview. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have questions or would like printed materials.

Place Corps initiated as a Gap Year program for participants ages 18-25 along with one design fellow. Over the course of our year together, we recognized the opportunity to grow our reach by offering additional program branches such as: a Summer Gap Immersive, a 10-month hybrid learning residency, and a fellowship. These new tracts are launching in 2020-2021 and continue to offer our cross-disciplinary experiential learning focused towards developing practical skills for radical living and advancing social and ecological solutions. We do this through our pedagogical framework--to know, to love, and to serve--which our curriculum weaves together.
One of the most dynamic aspects of learning at Place Corps is the opportunity for learners to be leaders and co-creators with Place Corps. We steward and develop leadership through individual study, place research projects, and practicum service projects created by residents. Additionally, residents design, build, and grow our regenerative homestead, steward their household budget and co-living systems, co-create workshops with educators and create unique curriculum they lead-facilitate. Place Corps lays a supportive foundation for deep diving into topics such as: collaborative leadership, new economy, social and environmental justice, civic engagement, climate solutions, interpersonal communications, applied creativity, and more. We believe in doing this work together as a methodology to transform the world we are living in.
Place Corps is committed to education being a practice of freedom.
As we advance into our second semester at Place Corps, our residents have begun their practicum service projects. These projects span from creating regenerative silvopasture, developing accessible new-economy High School curriculum, designing workshops and materials to further spread awareness of worker-self-directed organization models of enterprise, and collecting and sharing stories of people in place to uplift unheard voices and advance local cultural appreciation. These projects follow on the tails of their Place Story Projects; research projects where each participant traveled to their “home” place to discover and uncover a story of that place including: history, oral history, and observation.

Every year the iSchool visits 5 different innovative ecosystems around the world. We bring a select cohort of students to join us at each visit, where they discover what it's like to live and work in each city.
Students typically visit between 20 and 25 technology companies over the course of the 5-day trip, and have a chance to interact with alumni and do a bit of sightseeing along the way. The exact makeup of the trip visits varies from year to year, and adapts based on input from participating students.
Immersion experiences encourage students to understand what they want in employment, distinguish what they like in a city, and learn what recruiters are looking for in potential team members. These trips provide a unique opportunity for students to connect with Syracuse University alumni within these ecosystems.
This program is open to students from all majors, all schools and colleges, and all degree programs. Undergraduate and graduate students must take these trips as a credit-bearing academic course.
To learn more about immersion experience and various dates offered, visit https://ischool.syr.edu.
Are you interested in international gap-years or semesters?
Tufts is proud to offer two First-Year Global Programs that could be great experiences. Each program offers the opportunity to live and work overseas with a cohort of other Tufts students while supporting a community organization, living with a local host family, and discovering the broader world.
We ask you to consider one of our two programs:
A First-Year Fall Semester Abroad: The Tufts Civic Semester
Civic Semester participants take classes together on the Tufts campus in August before departing for one of two service locations where they study the local language and work part-time at a community organization.
Students return to campus for their Spring term with a full semester of academic credit, allowing them to graduate in four years.
Civic Semester is a student’s first semester of college, and tuition and fees cover all expenses, including the option to utilize financial aid awards.
A Gap Year Before Tufts: The Tufts 1+4 Bridge Year Program
Tufts 1+4 is a year of full-time international work before students begin their four years of study on campus.
In one of four countries across the globe, students make a difference on an issue they care about, have time to explore new interests, and return with a deeper sense of self and a broader perspective on the world.
The Tufts 1+4 program offers full financial support for any student who is admitted to the program and qualifies for Tufts financial aid at any level.
If you are interested in applying, you can do so on the Tufts applicant portal when you submit your Tufts application or at any time once you have been accepted to the University.
Please feel free to contact firstyearglobal@tufts.edu with any questions about these exciting opportunities!

The Verto Education program is built on the premise that not all students need to (or should) take the same linear path to earning their college degree – that the world offers these amazing experiential education opportunities that too few take advantage of.
Better yet, Verto uniquely partners with a number of U.S. and international colleges (including University of Oregon, Merrimack College, DePauw, Wooster, James Madison University, and more) to provide legitimate, transferable* college credits so that our programs’ participants can stay on a 4-year graduation timeline.
Verto Education currently offers 4 unique, “in-the-field” semester experiences covering Central America, The South Pacific and Southeast Asia as well as “on-campus” programs in Ireland, England and New Zealand.
While the locations, program focuses and individual experiences are different, the attention to detail, participant safety, education and the overall value of the experiences are not.
