Julie Trent, director
Julie Trent has been a music educator in the state of Arizona since 2003 and is the director of bands and orchestra at Glendale High School in Glendale, Arizona. She was selected as the Best High School Teacher in the City of Glendale in 2021 and 2022 and is a four-time quarterfinalist for the GRAMMY Music Educator Award. She provides opportunities for students to develop a love for music, commissions new works for wind band, and plays trumpet across the state and around the world.
Ms. Trent is a member of the Honors and Awards Committee at GHS, is a member of the International Bandmasters known as Phi Beta Mu, participates in SLAM: Servant Leadership Association for Music activities for music teacher leaders, and has been on staff with the Arizona Europe Trip since 2009. She has served as a committee member for the Arizona Marching Band Association and held positions as a board member for the Arizona Music Educators Association and Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association. In 2018, Ms. Trent was selected for the All-American Marching Band Director Academy. Ensembles under her direction have consistently received high marks at GUHSD, AzMBA and ABODA festivals in marching, jazz, and concert activities. In 2019, the GHS Marching Band was the first finalist from the district to perform at the AzMBA Grand Championships! Her students also won the State Marching Championship for ABODA Division III, and in 2014, she conducted the first public performance of a United Sound ensemble in the nation. Ms. Trent has directed ensembles at the AMEA Convention, National Independence Day Parade in Washington, D.C., Super Bowl XLII, Special Olympics, Manhattan School of Music, Guaranteed Rate Bowl, Holiday Bowl, Alamo Bowl, and on CNN. Julie earned the Bachelor of Music degree from Arizona State University in music education (summa cum laude) and the distinguished Master of Music degree from Northern Arizona University.
Zoe Spaulding, assistant director
Zoe Spaulding is the assistant director for the Glendale band. She has been a musician in the west valley for over a decade with multiple performances on clarinet, bass clarinet, and the legendary contrabass clarinet. Zoe is an English teacher and director of Ed Professions at Glendale High School. She is a proud alum of Grand Canyon University, holding the Masters in Education in Curriculum and Instruction and Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education. Zoe brings expertise and energy to the marching band at GHS and is a valuable member of our program!
Kim Young, assistant director
Kim Young is an alumni member and assistant director for the GHS Marching Band. She has played clarinet since 2000 and performed in the woodwind section as a member of the GHS Marching Band and GUHSD Honor Band. Kim is a science teacher and basketball coach at Glendale High School. She earned her Bachelor's and Master's Degree from Grand Canyon University where she represented the campus with pride as a college basketball player. As a key member of our band program, Kim specializes in helping every student feel valued and capable of achieving their goals.
