English Learner Program

Basic English Language Arts EL 1-2 Grades 9-12 2 Semesters 1 ELA Credit

Prerequisite: Limited English proficiency as determined by assessment; placement based on AZELLA test and the recommendation of EL Department. Concurrent enrollment in the following courses is required: EL LA Reading & LSV1, EL English Language Skills in Content and EL American Culture, Life & Citizenship enrollment is based on the recommendation of the EL Department.

The focus of Basic English Language Arts 1-2 is the integrated development of writing skills for beginning English learners. Students learn simple and compound sentence structure. The focus of grammar is the correct application of grammar when writing and speaking about a variety of topics, in a variety of genres. Students learn to apply correct language conventions, usage, and select verb tenses when writing simple and compound sentences. Grammar in context is emphasized. Composition pieces include cold prompt paragraphs, expository paragraphs, summaries, and personal narratives.


English Learners Language Arts Reading & Listening, Speaking, Vocabulary 1 Grades 9-12 2 Semesters 1 Elective

The focus of English Learners Language Arts Reading and Listening, Speaking, Vocabulary 1 is the integrated development of speaking, listening, and reading skills for beginning English learners. An additional focus is the development of English social and academic vocabulary. Students learn to pronounce words clearly, follow oral directions and commands, respond appropriately to oral questions, and comprehend the organization of academic text. Students will develop oral and silent reading skills for beginning English learners. Students will predict, summarize, clarify and generate questions for fictional, informational, and persuasive text. Students learn to analyze text for overall meaning.


English Learners English Language Skills in Content Grades 9-12 2 Semesters 1 Elective

Prerequisite: Limited English proficiency as determined by assessment; placement based on AZELLA test and the recommendation of EL Department. Language Skills in Content enrollment is based on the recommendation of the EL Department.

The focus of English Learners English Language Skills in Content is the introduction and direct instruction of high school content vocabulary and background knowledge when reading, writing, speaking, and listening about a variety of topics within various contents. Students are introduced to target academic vocabulary in a variety of contents with the use of nonfiction text and a variety of situations, such as spontaneous conversation, prepared dialogues, speeches, and presentations. Students will apply critical academic skills within the content concepts in which they are being/will be instructed presently or in the future.


English Learners American Culture, Life & Citizenship Grades 9-12 2 Semesters 1 Elective

Prerequisite: Limited English proficiency as determined by assessment; placement based on AZELLA test and the recommendation of EL Department. American culture, Life and Citizenship enrollment is based on the recommendation of the EL Department.

The focus of English Learners American Culture, Life and Citizenship is the introduction and direct instruction of key skills necessary for academic success while learning about American culture, life skills, and citizenship for beginning English learners. The students are introduced to vital skills while interacting with non-fiction text, media, and native English speakers. Students will be exposed to concepts in a variety of situations, such as spontaneous conversation, structured academic interactions, speeches, and presentations. Students will develop and apply academic skills while reading, writing, listening, and speaking.


English Learners Math Resource Grades 9-12 2 Semesters 1 Elective

Prerequisite: Limited English proficiency as determined by assessment; placement based on the recommendation of EL Department.

English Learners Math Resource is a math intervention class designed to meet the needs of EL students. Students' individual needs will be met through a diagnostic pre-test and direct instruction of Algebra skills. Emphasis is on basic Algebra skills along with remediation in deficient math skills.


English Language Arts EL 1-2 Grades 9-12 2 Semesters 1 ELA Credit

Students learn to apply correct language conventions in their writing. The integration of grammar is the correct application of grammar when writing and speaking about a variety of topics, in a variety of genres. Students learn to apply correct language conventions, usage, and select verb tenses when writing simple, compound, and complex sentences. Students conduct research using electronic resources and paraphrase their research in a presentation. Composition pieces include cold-prompt writing, text-based expository essays, summaries, personal narratives, business letters, and argument texts.


English Learners Language Arts Reading & Listening, Speaking, Vocabulary 2 Grades 9-12 2 Semesters 1 Elective

Prerequisite: Limited English proficiency as determined by assessment; placement based on AZELLA test and the recommendation of EL Department. Concurrent enrollment in the following EL course is required: English Language Arts EL 1-2. EL Academic Skills 2 enrollment is based on the recommendation of the EL Department.

The focus of English Learners Language Arts Reading and Listening, Speaking, and Vocabulary 2 is the study of literature through short stories, poetry, novels, and informational text. Students learn to find evidence to text-based questions and analyze for literary elements, figurative language, and overall meaning. The integration of listening, speaking, and vocabulary introduces students to academic vocabulary, and the academic skills of listening, note-taking, and making presentations.


English Learners Academic Skills 2 Grades 9-12 2 Semesters 1 Elective

Prerequisite: Limited English proficiency as determined by assessment; placement based on AZELLA test and the recommendation of EL Department. EL Academic Skills 2 enrollment is based on the recommendation of the EL Department.

The focus of English Learners Academic Skills 2 is the introduction and direct instruction of key skills necessary for academic success while learning about organization, note-taking, and content-specific vocabulary. Students practice these skills while interacting with nonfiction text and media. Students will be exposed to concepts in a variety of situations, such as spontaneous conversations, structured academic interactions, speeches, and presentations. Students will learn test-taking strategies to prepare them for science and history PBAs, ACT, and AZELLA tests. Students will develop and apply academic and test-taking skills while reading, writing, listening, and speaking.


English Language Arts EL 3-4 Grades 10-12 2 Semesters 1 ELA Credit

Prerequisite: Limited English proficiency as determined by assessment; placement based on AZELLA test and the recommendation of EL Department. Concurrent enrollment in EL LA Reading 3 is required. Academic Skills 3 enrollment is based on the recommendation of the EL Department.

The focus of English Language Arts EL 3-4 is the development of English writing proficiency along with effective oral presentation skills and reading strategies. Students learn to apply correct language conventions in their writing. Students conduct research using electronic resources and present their research. Composition pieces include cold prompt paragraphs, text-based argument essays, workplace documents, poems, and expressive pieces.


English Learners Language Arts Reading 3 Grades 10-12 2 Semesters 1 Elective

Prerequisite: Limited English proficiency as determined by assessment; placement based on AZELLA test and the recommendation of EL Department. Concurrent enrollment in English Language Arts EL 3-4 is required. Academic Skills 3 enrollment is based on the recommendation of the EL Department.

The focus of English Learners Language Arts Reading 3 is the development of reading strategies for comprehension of fiction, persuasive and functional text. The study of literature is continued through short stories, poetry, novels, and informational texts. Students learn to find evidence to text-based questions and analyze for literary elements, figurative language, and overall meaning. Effective oral and written communication skills are emphasized as well as advanced academic vocabulary.


Academic Skills 3 Grades 9-12 2 Semesters 1 Elective

Prerequisite: Limited English proficiency as determined by assessment; placement based on AZELLA test and the recommendation of EL Department. Academic Skills 3 enrollment is based on the recommendation of the EL Department.

The focus of Academic Skills 3 is the direct instruction and reinforcement of key skills necessary for academic success. Students practice skills while interacting with nonfiction text and media. Students are exposed to concepts in a variety of situations, such as spontaneous conversation, structured academic interactions, speeches, and presentations. Students learn test-taking strategies and receive data-driven differentiated instruction to prepare them for taking the ACT and AZELLA tests. Students develop and apply academic and test-taking skills while reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
