Honors Program at ASU (Summer 2022)
The Joaquin Bustoz Math-Science Honors Program (JBMSHP) is intended for mature and motivated students who are interested in academic careers requiring mathematics, science, or engineering-based coursework and are typically underrepresented in those fields of study. Participants live on the Arizona State University (ASU) Tempe campus while enrolled in a university-level mathematics or computer science course worth 3 college credits. Students also learn valuable college and academic success information that will help them successfully transition to college. Selected participants include first-generation college-bound students and students representing diverse backgrounds from high schools throughout the State of Arizona, including rural communities and the Navajo Nation.
Tuition, room and board, textbooks, and classroom materials are provided for selected students at no cost.
Application and letter of recommendation are due on February 20, 2022.

What is Biomedical Engineering?
Biomedical engineers work at the interface of technology and medicine on challenges that are critical to the advancement of health and scientific discovery. At ASU, we offer a rigorous undergraduate program in biomedical engineering (in addition to graduate studies) with opportunities for students to be involved in research, entrepreneurship, healthcare delivery, biomedical device design and global health.
Where do Biomedical Engineers work and what do they do?
Biomedical Engineers are primarily employed in:
Hospital and research facilities
Medical and education institutions
Government regulatory agencies
Medical device, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical industries
In industry, they may work in all aspects of product development including:
Quality assurance
Regulatory
Research and design
Business development
Manufacturing
Marketing
Sales
Thanks to their background in engineering, the sciences, and medical field, biomedical engineers often serve a coordinating or interfacing function and provide a key role for multidisciplinary teams. In the hospital, biomedical engineers serving in a clinical engineering function may provide advice on the selection and use of medical equipment and supervise performance testing and maintenance. Biomedical engineers may also build customized devices for special health care, rehabilitation or research needs. Government positions may involve evaluating new technologies, testing product quality and safety and setting standards.
