Introduction

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are infections including MRSA and Sepsis that can be contracted while receiving medical attention at a doctor's office, hospital, surgical site, or other medical providers. HAIs can infect anyone; however, young children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems have a higher risk of contracting HAIs because their immune systems are weaker and would have difficulty fighting off an infection. In fact, 44% of people who get HAIs are 65 year and older and 1 in 9 elderly individuals who contract a HAI die. HAIs not only are life-threatening, but can become a financial burden for patients as well as the community. Healthcare systems pay between $28-45 billion dollars to treat people with HAIs and individuals who contract a HAI pay about $1,100 in health-care costs to treat their infections.
