What is A Mental Disorder??

Mental Disorders are also called mental illnesses. But what exactly is a mental disorder? Well, a mental disorder is a health condition were a person mood, way of thinking and acting are affected. Mental disorders affect a person life in every aspect possible, it affects work, school, healthy relationships, and their way to try to adapt to their surroundings. People that have a mental health problem are afraid to talk about it, yet it is something they are not suppose to be ashamed of. Mental health problems are treatable and in some cases even get cured. Mental disorders come in many ways. They can be less severe and others are more advanced that they do need hospital help.

What Is The Percentage of Adults That Have A Mental Illness?

As we can see on this graph, we can see that all of these adults are 18 and older. Female have the highest percentage of mental illness. Yet why do women have a higher chance of mental illness. Well, women have a higher chance of having a mental illness because they are more likely to suffer of depression than men and also women are twice as likely to experience some type of anxiety then men. While, men are more likely to be diagnosed with some type of alcohol or drug problem. Why are white people more common to have a mental disorder? Well, white people are more likely to have a mental illness because of more traumatic experiences they had like war or illnesses (not saying that other places have not gone to war or have had an illness). Older people of age 50 and older are more likely to have a metal illness like anxiety, severe cognitive impairment, and mood disorders like depression or bipolar disorder. This can lead to suicide. Older men have the highest rate of suicide.

But How Do Mental Disorders Develop?

Mental illnesses have many ways of developing. The ways are either because of biological, physiological, and environmental reasons. What is a biological factor that makes mental illnesses occur. In the biological factor everything happens in the brain. The exact thing that occur in the brain are in some nerve cell circuits or even things that connect other to particular parts in the brain. Other things that have been linked to a mental illness are genetics, infections, or even injuries. Sometimes mental illness run in families. Infections in the brain also affects the mental illnesses like pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder is associated with the streptococcus bacteria that has been linked to the development of obsessive-compulsive disorder and other mental illnesses in children. Injuries can sometimes damage certain parts of the our brain that help us thinks and act.
