rummy nose tetra

The Rummy Nose Tetra is a true jewel of the freshwater aquarium, renowned for its striking and unmistakable coloration. This small, peaceful fish from South America brings both beauty and a useful social dynamic to a community tank.

Its name comes from its most distinctive feature: a brilliant, cherry-red nose that covers the entire front of its head. This vibrant red is contrasted by a sleek, silver body and a black and white striped tail fin. When kept in optimal conditions, the intensity of the red nose serves as a key health indicator. A brightly colored rummy nose signifies a happy, healthy fish in a well-maintained tank, while a pale nose can be a sign of stress or poor water quality.

These fish are schooling species by nature and should never be kept alone or in small numbers. A group of at least six, and preferably ten or more, is essential. In a proper school, they exhibit fascinating natural behavior, swimming in coordinated unison and displaying their full, dazzling colors. A solitary tetra will often appear shy and washed out.

To thrive, rummy nose tetras require clean, soft, slightly acidic water that mimics their native Amazonian habitats. They are sensitive to fluctuations, so stability is key. They do best in a planted tank with gentle filtration, where they can explore and feel secure. As omnivores, they accept a varied diet of high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and small frozen foods like brine shrimp.

Their peaceful temperament makes them excellent companions for other small, non-aggressive fish such as other tetra species, dwarf cichlids, and rasboras. By providing a proper school and a stable environment, aquarists can enjoy the full spectacle of the rummy nose tetra—a living jewel that moves as a shimmering, synchronized red beacon through the aquatic garden.
