Another vital consideration is the physical size of the slot, denoted by x16, x8, or x4. The number refers to the data lanes available. A full-size x16 slot offers the maximum bandwidth and is the intended home for your primary graphics card. Smaller x8 or x4 slots are suitable for secondary cards like sound cards or certain SSDs. Always consult your motherboard manual to identify the primary x16 slot, as some boards have multiple slots with differing lane allocations.


For storage, NVMe SSDs use compact M.2 slots, which also connect via PCIe lanes. Their performance is similarly dependent on the supported PCIe generation of that M.2 port. High-speed drives require a motherboard with PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 support to reach their advertised speeds.


Finally, plan your layout. High-performance components generate heat. Install your main GPU in the top-most x16 slot for optimal airflow, leaving space between adjacent cards whenever possible. By paying attention to your PCIe slots' generation, size, and placement, you can build a balanced, high-performance system without bottlenecks.
