Course Outline

Course description: 

Learn how to create basic 3D parts and create assemblies using Solidworks

   2. Sketch

      1. Different functions

         1. Line - draws a straight line between two points

         2. Circle - draws a circle. First click specifies the center, second click specifies the radius

         3. Rectangle- draws a rectangle. First click specifies where the corner/ center will be, second click specifies the size

         4. Fillet - adds a fillet to a corner. Not recommended for use in the sketch phase

         5. Offset - creates a copy of the lines and pastes it at the specified offset distance

      2. Fully- defined sketch- sketch with no degrees of freedom. All parameters are explicitly defined

         1. Dimension everything and have a spacial relation to the origin

         2. Use relations instead of dimensions

            1. Coincident, Vertical, Horizontal, Equal, Parallel, Perpendicular 

      3. Dimensioning

         1. Specifying measurements to each of the lines

   3. Features 

      1. Extruded boss/ base

         1. Select sketch

         2. Specify how much the sketch has to “come out of the page” to ADD material

      2. Extruded cut

         2. Specify how much the sketch as to come out of the page to REMOVE material

      3. Revolve

         3. It takes the sketch that you drew and rotates around your specified axis

      4. Fillet

         1. Rounds off an edge that you select

         1. Copies a feature and pastes it across a specified face/ plane

         1. Linear- copies a feature, and then pastes multiple copies of it in the specified direction

         2. Circular- copies a feature and pastes multiple copies of it around a central axis

         1. Coincident- makes one face/ point touch another

         2. Parallel- makes two faces/ edges parallel

         5. Fixed distance- fixes the distance between to faces/ edges, points (any of the combination

         6. Fixed angle- fixes the angle between two faces/ edges

      2. Advanced

         1. Limit distance- specifies a range of max and min distances two faces/ edges, points can be from each other

         2. Limit angle- specifies a range of max and min angles two faces/ edges can be from each other

Practice scope

1. Create a 3D model of a nut and bolt (ignore the threads). Assemble the two together

Instructor qualification

1. Model an assembly containing up to 5 parts given the engineering drawing. (fastener part files will be provided)
