Cleaning Our Own House: Transforming the Wisconsin Technical College System in Advancing Equity and Inclusion - A Student Context is an emerging project that was birthed from a mentoring relationship comprised of Megan Bahr, a Professional Communications student, and Jomarie Coloriano, Student Support Specialist, at Gateway Technical College. During the call for 2021 NCORE Scholar applicants, an opportunity to present a poster session was capitalized on leading to the development of this website. While the website may exhibit a curation of compelling evidence that supports the scope and purpose of this project (see Description), the goal is to continue to expand on the research presented.
The technical system in Wisconsin is being held increasingly accountable for advancing equity and inclusion transformational change efforts. Boosting outcomes requires broad-scale, institution-wide change via shared-governance and community of practice models. To this end, all boats are able to rise in environments that provide a sense of welcome, belonging and ability to thrive for students. By redefining their commitment to empowering diversity and undergoing comprehensive transformational change efforts, the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) has embarked in the journey to design equity and inclusion practices and interventions. With the goal of enhancing student success and cultural wealth, WTCS employs a shared governance and community of practice model with the sixteen technical colleges that are part of the state system to achieve this transformational change effort. In addition, the poster will provide an examination of effective initiatives, interventions, and strategies by exemplifying the work of Gateway Technical College and other Wisconsin technical colleges as part of the WTCS transformational change efforts.
