STEM WEEK 2021- sCIENCE

What a great week we had! Feel free to take a look at the slides for science as well as some photos of all the great fun we had. There's also lots of information about our STEM hero- Hayat Sindi.

STEM WEEK- MATHS

Lots of superb learning took place during STEM week in maths. The children really worked on their problem solving skills and had lots of fun solving challenging puzzles in a variety of ways.

Miss Malone put some amazing slides together so please check these out below as they also have links to her assembly all about our STEM hero Katherine Johnson.

Maths - 2021 STEM Week

stem week- eNGINEERING

We love engineering! Design and Technology combines so many of our STEM skills and it is really fun designing something for a specific purpose.

We learnt all about a new STEM hero in Maya Lin and Mr. Veale set us some wonderful design briefs we had to plan, make and evaluate as part of the engineering process. Check out Mr. Veale's slides below.

Design and Technology - STEM Week (Odd Years)

stem week- computing

Lots of fun was had with our computing tasks this week which focussed on programming and coding.

We also learnt all about our Compting STEM hero Annie Easley- what an inspirational woman!

Check out Mr. Presland's slides below which also feature his assembly all about Annie Easley.

Year 5 solar system work

Wow! Mrs. Sharkey shared some truly amazing work with me from her children in 5S today. The quality of both pieces is truly outstanding, especially considering they were done at home during such difficult times.

Olivia's renaming of the planets is a really original piece of work. Not only does she give lots of information about our planets in the solar system, she has thought about renaming them and put a little R.E spin on her work. Superb.

And as for Dhiya's Solar System fact-file...WOW. Just Wow. So much effort. So much information and presented in a really stunning fashion. Well done girls!

PITCH AND SOUND- APPLYING OUR LEARNING

Taking all we found out about pitch in our panpipes lesson, this week Year 4 carried out an independent science investigation where they had to think carefully about making accurate predictions about the type of sound their 'elastic band guitars' would make. This type of lesson really helps the children think about how to use their scientific skills to answer an enquiry. Well done all

Pitch and Sound

Year 4 were busy investigating how instruments use pitch to change the sound they make this week. Lot's of fun was had reinforcing their learning. Well done!

Big Bang Science- a gREAT dAY oUT

Year 5 went on a fantastic trip this past Friday and had the time of their lives. The Big Bang Science Fair, considered by most of Year 5 as the best trip of the year by far, was held at Sutton Grammar School. One workshop in particular, which was led by physicist Neil Monteiro, really captured the children's imagination and the rest of the day was spent exploring the various stalls and exhibits. This proved to be very educational and fun. Robotics, Planetariums, VR headsets, drone flying, video games, 3D printers and who could forget...making really, really hard paper sticks. An awesome day out for an awesome year group.

YEAR 5 SOLAR SYSTEM PROJECTS

Wow! Year 5 children have worked incredibly hard at home to create these solar system projects. I'm sure you will all agree they look amazing and are the perfect end to our fantastic learning all about Space.

Wow! Every year the standard of science experiments and projects seems to get better and better. I always look forward to seeing something new and this year certainly didn't disappoint. Well done to everyone who made it such a special day with your fantastic entries. Winner to be announced soon...

STEM WEEK- FORENSIC SCIENCE WORKSHOP

Key Stage Two became Forensic Scientists last week and learnt all about how science is used to solve crimes.

Searching crime scenes for clues was the name of the game. From the evidence found, the children had to then come up with the suspect. We all had a great time learning about the main types of fingerprint (whorl, loop and arch) and how this knowledge, combined with DNA and footprints (the clearer the footprint, the heavier the suspect) are the three most important pieces of evidence when solving crimes.

5H were split over the Morris twins as their choice of suspect. Being identical twins, both had the same DNA which made solving the crime even harder. A difference in fingerprints and Candy Morris wearing glasses were the deciding factors. Candy or Mandy? Who was the culprit your group decided on?
