The deputy-principal of Poltava Scientific Lyceum No3 teacher-methodologist Olesya Vovchenko coordinated the internship in the Lyceum. In her feedback Olesya Vovchenko highlighted the following: “Scientific Lyceum No 3 of Poltava City Council has been an internship placement site for students of the University of Leeds since 2019. This year, the student Anna Bugg worked with the students of Year 10 (Forms 10-A and 10-K) and Year 11 (Form 11-A). During the internship, English teachers L. Kordyuk, M. Zuyenko, S. Hryn and O. Odom demonstrated various forms of work, methods and techniques to the student, showed her the possibilities of using various mobile applications (Quizlet, Mentimeter, Kahoot, Padlet, LearningApps, etc.), as well as elements of the CLIL methodology. The teachers provided the student with advice and tips on preparing and conducting lessons, and helped her to successfully complete her internship. It is worth noting that communication with native speakers is extremely important for students learning a foreign language. After all, English is a must-have today: it opens the door to careers, travel, meeting people and different cultures, to the whole world of music, cinema, and educational opportunities. Lyceum students and their teachers used this opportunity to the fullest! We express sincere thanks to Dr T. Lunova for her assistance in organising the internship.”
Anna Bugg provided the following feedback after the internship: “I am writing to share my experience and thoughts with you about the placement I completed at your Lyceum, with your students in their English lessons. Firstly, I would like to thank you for this opportunity I had, I found it to be an exciting and interesting experience. It allowed me to observe how teaching takes place in your classrooms but also interact with the teachers and students who were very friendly and welcoming. This made it less daunting for me, sharing presentations with students and getting the opportunity to ask and answer questions with them. As the days went on, I felt my confidence grow more and gained vital experience of what teaching is like. I found the lessons to have a good variation in learning styles. With some tasks involving interacting with students, for example, me sharing a presentation on plants and animals in the UK and then students sharing their presentations to me. I also got involved in completing quizzes online, such as Kahoot. I found this a fun way to consolidate information learned and create some healthy competition with the students. Overall, I found it a very enjoyable experience and would be hopeful to experience something like this again!”
The Department of English and German Philology expresses deep gratitude to Dr Martyn Lamb and Dr Lucy Taylor, School of Education, University of Leeds for their strong support of the teaching internship project and hopes that the cooperation will continue.

The speaking club offers a unique opportunity for the university students to develop their English speaking skills, to expand their vocabulary and grammar structure range and to break the language barrier in speaking with native speakers.
As usual, the speaking club meeting was lively and productive. The aim of the session was to master a range of argumentation techniques.
At first, students reviewed English idioms from previous meetings and learned some new ones. Then Gregory Raver-Lampman asked the students to give their ideas for the things they would take to a deserted island: books, movies, a friend, etc. After creating buzz-groups, the students were attempting to prove that their choice is the most optimal one. At the end of the lesson, students got feedback on accuracy and content, summarized their decisions.
Students are delighted to participate in the speaking club. Volodymyr Kotsiuba, a first year student of FD-18 group, says that he immensely liked to prove the correctness of his decisions using argumentative English phrases. He is gladly studying English idioms considering their utmost importance for natural communication in English. “English speaking club is a brilliant and indispensable opportunity to polish your communicative skills”, – says Volodymyr.
Kravchenko Viktoriia (FD-18) adds: “First of all, participating in Gregory Raver-Lampman’s club and interacting with a native speaker increases my English competence level. Secondly, we discuss interesting topics with other academic groups, our interaction goes beyond just our group which is a useful practical experience ”
