What factors are essential for individuals to perceive their lives as having been happy when they reflect on them in later life?
The lives we look back on are shaped by memory, happiness is grounded in emotion, and judgments about what matters most are guided by decision-making. Building on cognitive psychology and cognitive science, our laboratory conducts research on memory, emotion, and decision making in later adulthood. In addition, we investigate social connectedness, which are indispensable both to the well-being of older adults and to addressing the broader challenges faced by super-aging societies.
Decision Making: Compensating for Age-Related Cognitive Decline Through the Use of AI
Decision making in later life has profound implications for everyday living, including decisions about continuing employment, selecting medical treatments, managing risks in old age, and planning one’s future life course. However, age-related declines in cognitive functioning can make it increasingly challenging to manage decisions that involve complex option structures, probabilistic reasoning, time pressure, or novelty. In this context, large language models—which can generate multiple decision options in real time based on vast amounts of information—have the potential to fundamentally transform decision making among older adults. In our laboratory, we examine how aging shapes decision-making processes and investigate the extent to which AI use influences decision making in older adulthood.

Memory: What Roles Does Memory Play in Later Life?
Memory is not a device that records events and experiences verbatim. Much of what we experience is forgotten, and even retained memories are subject to transformation over time. If memory is not merely a record, what roles does it play? Human memory supports future behavioral choices (directive function), facilitates communication through the sharing of information with others (social function), regulates emotions by attenuating unpleasant memories and selectively recalling positive ones (emotion regulation function), and integrates one’s continually evolving sense of self and values (self function). In later life, the act of reflecting on one’s life is entirely constituted by memory. In our laboratory, we investigate how these functional roles of memory change with aging.

Emotion: Later life, despite being marked by multiple losses, is not necessarily unhappier than other life stages.
Later life is often characterized as a period of heightened stress compared with other life stages, owing to multiple forms of loss, including the loss of close relationships through the death of parents or friends, the loss of social roles associated with children’s independence or retirement, and the loss of health due to illness. Nevertheless, empirical evidence indicates that older adults are not less happy than younger generations; rather, they often report equal or even higher levels of well-being. In our laboratory, we examine the psychological factors that are critical for well-being in later life and investigate how emotion regulation changes with aging.

Building and Measuring Social Connections Essential for Well-Being.
A large number of observational studies have consistently reported that social connectedness is crucial for the realization of well-being. However, there is a notable scarcity of intervention studies that aim to enhance well-being by actively fostering social connections. In response to this gap, our laboratory, in collaboration with other research groups, is conducting an active aging project designed to build social connections within local communities and promote well-being. In addition, we are developing methods that enable the quantitative assessment of large-scale social connectedness.
