Phonics in Year 1 and 2
Whether your child is at the early stages of reading or reading fluently, phonics will support their reading. In Year 1 & 2 all children will continue to develop their phonics knowledge.
Year 1
Most children will work though recapping sounds learnt in reception e.g. s, u, sh, ai, oi and learning alternative sound e.g. ie (pie), i_e (shine). In addition to this, children will learn how to segment and blend sounds.
Year 2
In year 2 most children will recap and apply their knowledge from year 1. When ready they will then move onto spelling patterns using suffixes (marry, marrying, married, marries).
Guided reading
Guided reading is an approach where the children work in small groups with the teacher. The children will read a text collaboratively answering open and closed ended questions to build their comprehension skills.
In year 1 children will start guided reading in the spring term.
In year 2 children start guided reading in the autumn term.
