News from the Park

Parent Newsletter 5 06.10.23

Wow! What a brilliant week we have had at Brunswick Park!

We love learning from others and welcoming visitors into our wonderful school.

We started the week with a visit from a very special guest - the Mayor of Barnet! She visited us to introduce our new School Councillors and gave an inspiring talk too. It was a very special event!

On Wednesday, Mia from Food Bank Aid led assemblies and visited some classes, educating us on how food banks work and to share the remarkable work that Food Bank Aid does. Mia commented on the incredible support and generosity of our Brunswick Park community over the years. Next week, we are collecting items for Food Bank Aid. Please keep reading to find out how you can offer your support.

As always, we ended the week with celebration assemblies, celebrating the successes and achievements of our children across the school. Please keep reading to discover the superstars this week.

I wish you a fantastic weekend and look forward to seeing you on Monday.

Please see the photos below of the Food Bank assembly and our wonderful School Councillors.

Reading Corner

You asked and we listened!  The children have been busy making suggestions of books we should buy for the library.  Using the money raised through our book fairs, look at our haul!

Thank you to everyone who has visited us at our book fairs.  Your contributions mean we can keep our library well stocked.  Our next book fair is coming up next half term, we look forward to seeing you there.

Pause, Prompt, Praise is a strategy that may be useful when reading with your child at home.

Pause – If (or when) your child comes to a word they don’t know try not to jump in straight away and supply the correct word. Wait and give your child time to work out the word. In the first instance ‘pausing’ creates an opportunity for your child to try and self-correct or work out the word for him/herself.

Prompt – If your child successfully supplies the word they have stumbled over it’s a good idea to suggest that he/she goes back to the beginning of the sentence and re-reads the whole sentence again (to recap meaning) before reading on. If your child has not independently worked out the problem word, at this point you may intervene and prompt them with some quick, low-key suggestions about what they could do.

Praise – Praise your child’s reading efforts and successes whenever you think it is appropriate during the reading process.

Thank you

A big thank you to Jacqueline Harris who has won a fabulous selection of books to help us celebrate Black History Month.  Thank you so much for your support!

Environmental Team: Just One Tree Event - Friday 13th October 2023

The Environmental Team was set up last year as an off-shoot of School Council. The team is passionate about our whole school environment, the physical surroundings and the impact we are having on the planet. Throughout the year, the Environmental Team will have key areas for development including sharing messages and leading projects across the school, litter picking, better recycling and looking after school equipment.

As part of our green promise this year, Brunswick Park are taking part in a nationwide charity project called 'Just One Tree.' Many schools in Barnet are taking part too.

We are asking everyone to come to school on Friday 13th October dressed in green and to donate £1 to this brilliant cause. For every £1 donated, a tree gets planted as part of a worldwide project to help fight the devastating impact of deforestation. The £1 donation can be paid on SchoolMoney.

The Environmental Team would like to thank everybody in advance for their help and support.

Macmillan Coffee Morning update

Last week, we hosted our Brunswick Park Macmillan Coffee Morning. As a school community, we raised a fantastic £716.09 for Macmillan! A huge thank you to everyone who supported this event by donating to the coffee morning, non-uniform day or cake sale.

A big thank you to Judith Smith for working with a group of children to organise this event.
