News from the Park

Parent Newsletter 28 03.05.2024

We have had a very busy and exciting week at Brunswick Park.

1BW went to Osidge Library for a 'come and read with me' session. They had a brilliant time exploring the library and sharing stories. 1EB are looking forward to their visit later this term.

Year 5 have been working hard to develop their persuasive writing skills by writing a letter to the judge in the story of 'Holes' written by Louis Sachar. They shared these wonderful letters with their families.

On Wednesday, Year 2 were very excited to show off the African masks they made by hosting an exhibition for their families! They put their creativity to work and crafted some amazing pieces. Not only did they create beautiful masks, but they also wrote instructions in English to share how they made them. It was a wonderful way to celebrate their hard work in art, English and geography! Well done Year 2 - you have produced excellent work. We can't wait to see what you create next!

RB class enjoyed a visit to Sunshine Garden Centre to link with last half terms focus book, Errol’s Garden. They looked at the water features (spotting some fish), array of pots and flowers. The children were excited by the fruit and vegetable plants, and used the labels to work out what produce would eventually grow. We chose some bedding plants to buy which we will plant in our outdoor area.

Today, with the help of three amazing Year 6 children, we revealed Owly and explained the exciting project we are taking part in to raise awareness of and money for the North London Hospice. The children spoke with great confidence - I am very proud of them!

Please remember that school is closed on Monday - have a wonderful long weekend!

Deaf Awareness Week - 6th -12th May 2024

Reading Corner

This week in our Reading Assembly we read The Bowerbird by Julia Donaldson and Catherine Rayner.  It is a love story about a male Bowerbird, Bert, who collects things to decorate his nest in order to entice his chosen mate into his nest.  Unfortunately, Nanette is a very demanding bird and poor Bert is tricked into leaving his beautiful nest to find a gold ring.  When he returns, all his carefully curated items have been stolen.  Fear not readers it all ends well for Bert eventually as he meets a sweet and kind bird who is not so demanding.

If this has peaked your child’s interest in birds here are some other books they may enjoy.

Why is a flamingo pink? Can a parrot talk? Is a bald eagle really bald? This follow-up to the hugely successful The Big Book of Bugs, The Big Book of Beasts and The Big Book of the Blue answers these questions and many more. It opens with introductory spreads explaining how to recognise different bird’s eggs, the bird family tree, why different species of birds have different beaks and feathers, and why some birds migrate and travel vast distances every year. You’ll find out about specific varieties of bird, including hummingbirds, peacocks, flamingos, bald eagles, secretary birds, albatrosses and red-crowned cranes. This is a big, beautiful book to look at again and again

This beautiful, informative book takes you through a year in the life of the birds you will find in Britain and Ireland and is divided into four sensational seasonal sections. Find out what birds do in each season, learn about birdsong, beaks, nests and eggs, the science of flight, migration, what to grow to attract different birds to your garden and what foods to put out on your bird table. Learn about different ways of recording what you see and about birds in literature. There are sections on birds of prey and corvids too.
