Parent Newsletter 20 09.02.2024

This week, we celebrated Children's Mental Health Week 2024. Children's Mental Health Week is an awareness week that empowers, equips and gives a voice to all children and young people in the UK. Bigfoot Arts Education led exciting and informative assemblies and workshops that provided children with strategies to manage their well-being and mental health. They also educated them on the importance of speaking up and reminded them of the key people they can turn to, in school and at home, if they are worried.

On Tuesday, it was Safer Internet Day 2024. Safer Internet Day is the UK's biggest celebration of online safety. To celebrate this day, Tracy and  Ms Heath led an assembly and led PSHE sessions, providing our pupils with top tips and reminders on how to stay safe when using the internet.

Please keep reading to find out about an exciting optional school competition that your child may like to enter.

Year 2 embarked on an exciting journey to St Paul's to delve into the fiery tales of London's past. The children brought history to life through a 'fire fire workshop', stepping into the shoes of fire-stricken Londoners, Christopher Wren and Samuel Pepys. The adventure reached new heights as they ascended to the Dome, marvelling at the cityscape below.

Year 1 are studying our local area and how it has changed throughout the years. A significant historical figure who lived in our area was Sir Thomas Lipton. Year 1 walked to Osidge Mansion where he lived. They had the chance to see the blue plaque on the house referring to Sir Thomas Lipton and some of the original features of the building.

Year 5 had a great time on their geography fieldwork trip to Oakhill Park this week.  As part of their Rivers topic, they took a range of quantitative measurements of Pymmes Brook such as the depth, width and speed of flow.

In Year 6, they have been learning about fast fashion and how we, as consumers, can be more sustainable. They participated in a clothes swap to reuse clothes that they no longer want.

Year 3 showcased their expert knowledge on volcanoes yesterday when they invited their parents and carers into class to be the audience for their explanation texts. This work explained how and why volcanoes erupt using a variety of presentational devices, difficult technical vocabulary and conjunctions to link sentences. They also exhibited their erupting volcano models and geography work on the working wall. There was a great turnout and everyone loved seeing the progress that is being made - well done!

Next week is half term - we hope you have a great week.

We look forward to seeing you on Monday 19th February.

Attendance

As you will be aware, schools are required to closely monitor children's attendance at school and contact families individually if their child(ren)'s attendance is a concern. We would like to take this opportunity to remind all our families that, for the sake of their social skills, friendships, progress and attainment, it is absolutely vital for children to be at school as much as possible, and that they should only be kept away from school when they are definitely not well enough to attend.

Holidays must not be taken in term time and even if we are informed in advance, we are not able to authorise absence of this nature and a Fixed Penalty Notice may be given. Please refer to the graph which will give you an understanding of the impact of absence on children's progress and attainment.

Optional poster competition - Safer Internet Day: online safety awareness

Earlier this week was Safer Internet Day 2024.  From gaming to streaming, young minds actively contribute to shaping their digital spaces. Safer Internet Day 2024 acknowledges the crucial role in fostering a secure online environment. As part of this, we are launching an optional poster competition.

Encourage your child to participate by designing an online safety poster, emphasising the importance of staying safe online. Winners from KS1 and KS2 will have their posters displayed around the school. The deadline is 26th February 2024 so please pass on your entries to class teachers after half term. Please make sure your name and class are written on the back of your poster. Good luck to all those who enter!
