News from the Park

Parent Newsletter 18 26.01.24

At Brunswick Park, we love taking part in wow events - they engage the children and get them excited about their learning.

Year 5 went on a brilliant trip to Tower Bridge this week. They went on a tour of the engine rooms to learn how the bridge used to work and also went up to the glass walkway. (Please see the photos below).  In addition, they took part in a computing workshop to program a simulation of the bridge opening and closing to allow boats through. Did you know that Tower Bridge is actually three bridges in one? It is a bascule, suspension and cantilever bridge all in one.

Throughout the term, we have more wow events to look forward to. We are being visited by two authors. On Monday 29th January, Annemarie Anang will be visiting Reception and Key Stage 1 children.  Annemarie will be providing an interactive sing-a-long workshop for the children based on her debut book “Nefertiti”.  They will learn how to drum like Nefertiti and discover some of the wonderful global instruments in the story like the marimba and kalimba. On Tuesday 20th February, Karen McCombie will be visiting Key Stage 2 children. Karen is an award-winning author of over 100 books, who has been described by Waterstones as  "one of children's fiction's most accomplished authors".  She will be providing a high-energy one-hour talk to each Key Stage 2 year group outlining where she gets her inspiration from and talk about her own initial struggles with reading as a child. Thank you to Mrs Hubball for organising these special visits and to the PTA for funding them.

We also have some exciting PSHE sessions, assemblies and workshops led by Bigfoot Arts Education coming up before half term too as part of Children's Mental Health Week 2024. Thank you to Tracy for arranging these important learning experiences. We look forward to sharing more about these towards the end of this half term.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Reading Corner

Thank you to everyone who supported the Cook for Books cake sale last week by either supplying or buying the cakes.  Year 5 raised £119.60 through your generosity and are looking forward to choosing some new books for their classroom.  The next Cook for Books cake sale will be on Friday 9th February – the last day of this half term – and will be hosted by Year 4. Can they beat the Year 5 total?

Next week, we are looking forward to welcoming author Annemarie Anang to Brunswick Park.  She will be providing some interactive story telling sessions with Reception, Year 1 and 2.  At the end of the day, she will be doing a book signing under the shelter and we have a limited supply of her book ‘I am Nefertiti”, which you can buy for £7.99 on the day (cash only).

Healthy Packed Lunch

If your child has a packed lunch, it is important that they are provided with healthy and nutritious food. Please remember we are a nut free school so nuts or products containing them must not be sent into school.

Whether squeezing it in before the school run in the morning or before bed on busy midweek evenings, preparing your child's lunchbox can seem like just another thing on the list. School meals are a great choice, but if you do make a packed lunch for your child then click on the click below for a range of quick, easy, healthier lunchbox ideas and tips:

If your child is in KS2 we encourage you to send in a healthy snack for your child to enjoy at morning break time - our days are very busy and children need to stay full of energy! Fruit and vegetables snacks are provided for children in EYFS and KS1.

Snacks must be either fruit or vegetables only. Please remember that we are a nut free school. Please do not send in any nuts or products containing them. Thank you for your support and understanding.

Spring Birdwatch

Nursery have had a wonderful time completing the RSPB Big Schools' Birdwatch 2024! The children worked together to create a birdwatching hut and make bird feeders. They carefully counted how many birds landed in the garden.
