News from the Park

Parent Newsletter 17 19.01.24

This week we have been celebrating the fantastic writing lessons that take place at Brunswick Park. Miss Jordan and I have had the pleasure of visiting lots of classes across the school to see the excellent English lessons that have taken place and read lots of Big Writes. Reception were having lots of fun making porridge and writing lists of all the ingredients and equipment they used; Year 1 were writing brilliant diary entries linked to the story 'The Magic Porridge Pot'; Year 2 were applying their historical knowledge to their writing as they prepare to write a diary entry about the Great Fire of London; Year 3 wowed us with their geographical understanding, applying and using accurate terminology to write an explanation text; Year 4 were developing their understanding of adverbials, ready to use in their next Big Write connected to their RE unit of work; Year 5 worked incredibly hard to identify and use rhetorical questions; and we thoroughly enjoyed reading Year 6's setting descriptions that were full of vivid description and figurative language.

A big thank you to everyone who has donated school uniform to the PTA pre-loved uniform event which is taking place next Friday.

I wish you a wonderful weekend and look forward to seeing you on Monday!

Big Fun Art Adventure Trail for North London Hospice

We are delighted to announce that we are taking part in an exciting fundraising project to support North London Hospice. The charity has been caring for local people since 1984 and is committed to empowering patients with life-limiting illnesses, supporting them to achieve the best quality of life possible. They welcome people from all faiths and communities within the boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey and provide physical, emotional and spiritual care to patients and families, friends and carers. All their services are provided free of charge but they only receive about quarter of the funding needed from the government and rely on donations to cover the rest.

Their Big Fun Art Adventure – a first for north London – is a unique project that brings together businesses (through sponsorship), schools and community groups, artists and the general public in support of the hospice to celebrate creativity and community. There will be a trail of at least 30 huge, uniquely painted owl sculptures that will be displayed from mid-August for eight weeks before they are auctioned to raise much needed funds to support the hospice.

On the trail, alongside the 6ft owls, will be a similar number of owlets (identical in shape to the large owls but half their size) decorated by schools and community groups. We are adopting one of these and can’t wait to have fun designing and decorating it, and then seeing it out on the trail in the summer. After the public trail, our owlet will be returned to us to keep as a lasting legacy of our support.

It promises to be a hoot! The trail will be a great way to discover the local area in a unique way by spotting owls on local streets, parks and venues. The perfect free day out that will raise awareness and funds for a local cause! Reading Corner

We are very excited to announce that we have two authors coming to visit us this term.

On Monday 29th January, Annemarie Anang will be visiting our reception and KS1 children.  Annemarie will be providing an interactive sing-a-long workshop for the children based on her debut book “Nefertiti”.  They will learn how to drum like Nefertiti and discover some of the wonderful global instruments in the story like the marimba and kalimba.

On Tuesday 20th February, Karen McCombie will be visiting our KS2 children. Karen is an award winning author of over 100 books, who has been described by Waterstones as  "one of children's fiction's most accomplished authors".  She will be providing a high-energy one-hour talk to each year group (Y3-6) outlining where she gets her inspiration from and talk about her own initial struggles with reading as a child.

We thank the PTA for funding these visits as I am sure the children will find them very inspiring.
