Apprenticeship Credits
Apprenticeship is an exciting career option for GSSD students and many of our GSSD students pursue a career in the trades when they graduate.
GSSD Video -- Apprenticeship Trades -- Highlighting students from Good Spirit School Division. They were able to work on apprenticeship hours prior to graduation. Please read through the information on this page to find out how a student can do that.
If you are interested in a trade, the best web site to explore is the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship web site below. You will see that the first tab indicates "Designated Trades". If you click on that tab , it will take you to a table that lists approximately 50 trades that are available in Saskatchewan. Each trade has a link which allows you to explore more information on that particular trade.
If you are interested in becoming an apprentice in a specific trade after graduation (i.e. Welding), you will have to find employment after high school with a company/journeyperson who is willing to take you on as a paid apprentice. Apprenticeship involves a combination of trade time and education and will take a certain number of years before you become a journeyperson. If you want to know more -- use the web site above and explore the trade you are interested in. You will have to work each year under the supervision of a journeyperson for so many hours. You can reduce some of the hours by taking part in the following during your high school years.--Grade 10 to Grade 12. As a student there are ways you can earn hours towards your apprenticeship training while you are in high school. You do not have to be a formal apprentice during high school, but the hours could be used if you choose to go into a trade after a high school.
Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship Program
Once you formally apprentice after high school, your application asks you to attach your Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship Certificate if you completed it. You will be issued a certificate once you complete this program. If you complete all of it, you would have 300 hours of trade time that can be used towards a trade that you are working in.
If you are interested in this program, please see your school principal.
High School Classes in the Trade
Once you formally apprentice after high school, your application asks you to attach your high school transcript. The Saskatchewan Apprenticeship Board will look over your transcript, and decide on hour recognition. (i.e. Welding 10 -- may receive 100 hours of trade-time recognition).
Apprenticeship High School Classes
If you are working under the supervision of a journeyperson in one of the desginated trades, and completing work that is eligible for a Form6a recognition, and it is paid work, your hours could be eligible for a high school credit. There are 4 credits available:
Each credit requires 100 hours of work in the trade. (Please see your school principal).

Apprenticeship 20B
Apprenticeship 30A

The Form6a document may be retained and attached to your application if you choose to formally apprentice in that trade. The application asks if you have any prior work experience (i.e. Form6a's).
