Richard Cender Schwab Classic

Richard Cender was not a prototypical inspiring teacher. To be honest, he was short, plain looking and spoke in a monotone voice. To see him on the street you would not have looked twice. However, as a student and a player on his team, I can say with absolute confidence that Richard Cender made a massive impact on my life and the lives of others. Richard, in the classroom, ignited a passion for history in his students. His dedication to education helped many students succeed and graduate high school. His work ethic was unmatched. As a coach, Richard preached dedication and hard work, defense first and team play. He took players and made them better basketball players and human beings. Richard is one of my personal heroes and I know I am not alone in that regard.

Richard is the reason I became a teacher and why I coach basketball today. He is also the reason many former players and students have gone on to leading successful lives. Those of us who had the honour of knowing Richard miss him dearly but are proud that this memorial tournament honours his memory.
