Electricity and Magnetism

Electricity and Magnetism (5.1) Lessons & Projects

Scientific Method Template 5.5.1 & 5.5.2

Design and carry out an investigation and recognize the accuracy in observation and measurement. ; and, with guidance, apply suitable methods to record, compile, interpret and evaluate observations and measurements. Use the template for observations and reflection when carrying out investigations in science.

Topic A 5.5.3: Demonstrate and interpret evidence of magnetic fields around magnets and around current-carrying wires, by use of iron filings or by use of one or more compasses.

This program is simple but fun. Students will use the Micro:bit's internal compass to detect magnetic fields.

Which unexpected objects have magnetic fields? Be sure to document your findings.

Look at our Micro:bit page to see all of the awesome things you can do for these units with Micro:bit!

Electricity - Caution!

Recognize and appreciate the potential dangers involved in using sources of electrical currents. 5.5.1.1, 5.5.1.2, & 5.5.1.3

Electrical Safety Signs: Students will use the templates to create their own electrical hazard signs.

Distinguish electrical conductors-materials that allow electricity to flow through them- from insulators-materials that do not allow electricity to flow through them. 5.5.5

Recognize that the amount of electricity we use in our homes is measured in kilowatt hours. Interpret and explain the reading on a household electrical meter and efficiency labels on electrical appliances. 5.5.8 & 5.5.9

Read analog meters and move the dials to create a reading on the interactive slide.

Electricity Breakout Boxes:

Contact your Technology Integration Facilitator to guide your class through an electricity themed breakout/escape activity. Students use their new knowledge of electricity to solve a series of puzzles to unlock a mystery box.
