Exploring Alberta’s Natural Resources
with Inside Education!
Founded in 1985, Inside Education is Alberta’s largest environmental and natural resource education charity. Working from offices in Edmonton and Calgary, our mandate is to support K-12 school teachers across Alberta and inspire their students when it comes to working towards a balanced, sustainable future for our environment, economy, and society. If today’s students become informed and engaged leaders in tomorrow’s issues, who are able to make informed responsible decisions, we believe the world will be in good hands.
In this session, students will explore Alberta’s Natural Resources through three different workshops focusing on the fields of Energy, Environmental Monitoring, and Wildlife Management.
Workshop 1: Energy
In this workshop, students will shine a light on Alberta’s Energy sector through the construction of solar lanterns. Students will gain an understanding of renewable and alternative energy sources, advancing technological innovations, and the various career opportunities that are associated with these fields.
Workshop 2: Environmental Monitoring - Air Quality
This workshop will highlight the importance of air quality and ways in which air quality can be measured. Students will explore what factors might contribute to the changing air quality in their communities and get hands-on experience with measuring air quality through an Airbeam Air Quality monitor. Students will recognize that air quality is not just hot air, but an important factor to consider in their communities.
Workshop 3: Wildlife Monitoring
In this workshop, students will explore the field of Wildlife Management through an experiential game. It will demonstrate the interconnectedness of our natural systems, the dynamics of populations within an ecosystem, and some of the natural and anthropogenic factors affecting wildlife populations. Students will then discuss how the data from this game can be used in real world wildlife monitoring applications. (Note: please wear sturdy footwear for this workshop).
