'THE FOOD PYRAMID'
The food pyramid comprises of six categories that are grain products, meats, fats, oil and sweets. The food guide pyramid was developed by U.S. Department of Agriculture. The arrangement of the food groups in a pyramid shape calls attention to the kinds of foods to eat more of and those to eat in moderation. The shape of the pyramid is widest at the base and narrowest at the tip. The emphasis of pyramid is on increasing the proportion of fruits, vegetables, and grains and those foods that form the base of pyramid are required in moderation by our body like higher fat foods and sweets. So as shown in the pyramid in addition to grains, our diet should also include ample servings of fruits and vegetables. Our daily need of vitamins and minerals as well as fiber comes from plant foods. Grains, fruits and vegetables are to be consumed in large quantities. Meats, poultry, seafood and dairy products should make small contribution to our diet due to saturated fat in them. The foods at the tip of the pyramid are those which are required by our body only sparingly . The pyramid emphasizes the need for us to choose a variety of foods on one hand and to watch for their quantity based on body requirements on the other hand.
