What is the role of the Teacher Counsellor in Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools?
From Administrative Procedure 250:
School-based counselling services aim to provide the universal, targeted (small group), and, at times, individual supports required for students to be successful at school. Services may be developmental, preventative, or crisis-oriented and include:
2.1 Group processes that assist students with personal, social, educational, or career issues.
2.2 Individual processes which assist students with specific personal, social, educational, or career issues.
Can the Teacher Counsellor meet with my child outside of school hours?
No, the Teacher Counsellor can only meet with students during school hours due to contract obligations and Health and Safety protocols.
When does the Teacher Counsellor meet with students?
The Teacher Counsellor meets with students during the school day. The student will miss some class time to meet with the Teacher Counsellor.
Can the Teacher Counsellor tell me what my child has talked about in their meetings?
Due to confidentiality requirements, the Teacher Counsellor is not able to provide parents/guardians with specific information that is discussed during meetings unless the student has given them permission to do so. The Teacher Counsellor may be able to share general strategies they are teaching the student for use at home. The parent/guardian will need to contact the Teacher Counsellor with any questions they may have.
