About Student Accommodation Division
AN OVERVIEW OF THE DIVISION
This division is a part of the University of Peradeniya. It provides a comprehensive service to all students of the University by administering and allocation of 23 hostels in the University, with the aim of helping to support the student experience by providing efficient and effective accommodation services and facilities.
Providing residential facilities for Undergraduate Students, recovering hostel fees & fines for damages from accommodated students through the full time sub wardens of the halls of residence and supplying furniture & other facilities for halls as according to the requests given by the sub wardens of the respective halls of residence are the main functions of this division.
KEY ACTIVITIES:
Provide accurate information and advice regarding the accommodation application/allocation process
Recognize applicants as individuals with their own requirements at all times. (Ex. Disability students)
Allocate students into halls with the aim of providing balanced effective communities
Provide hostel facilities for low income family members where appropriate
Efficiently and effectively respond to student issues and concerns
Liaise/mediate/co-ordinate with other University departments to provide optimum support to residents.
Seek the students’ opinion, analyse trends and recommend developments to the facilities and services provided to students.
Supervising and conducting the standards of food hygiene and sanitary services of halls of residence.
ACHIEVEMENTS :
The Wijewardene Hall was handed over after the maintenance work was completed.
To be able to create a separate website to inform about the activities of the Student Accommodation Division.
The Mawalawatta Farm building was taken over under the Accommodation Division and provision of space for the placement of 50 students from April 2023
Future plans:
Residential accommodation is expected to be provided to all students except the second year.
.Creating adequate room facilities for disabled students in every hall.
.A place has been identified for the construction of a hostel that can provide facilities for 600 women and the related tasks are quickly accomplished through the appointed committee.
A hostel facility that can accommodate 1900 students has been requested, thereby providing accommodation to all students except second year.
Developing a software for easy and speedy handling of affairs of residential students together with halls of residence, student service branch, account branch and the other units of the university.
When there are some problems in the electrical system or in the sewerage system, it is very difficult to trace the problems due to the unavailability of separate plan for electrical or sewerage systems. Hence it is a must to prepare plans for both, electrical system as well as the sewerage system belonging to the halls of residence.
Students are regularly informed about the careful use of water and electricity and to prevent damage to hall properties.
To reduce the use of papers as much as possible by making the students aware through the division web site and making them download the required documents from the web site.
