The landscape division is responsible for all landscape planning, designing and implementation work in the University. We are always concerned about the aesthetic appeal, ecological soundness & functional aspect of the landscape designs implemented at the University park. Landscape designing at University park is done according to a long tradition of landscape concepts followed since the inception of the University. Landscape division designs new landscape plans when there are new expansions of the University.
Landscape division is responsible for maintenance of soft & hard landscape features of the University park. Both soft and hard landscape features are essential for maintaining a healthy, scenic & functional landscape.
Soft landscape maintenance
We maintain lawns, beds (seasonal, perennials & island), hedges (formal & informal), borders (single & mixed) & topiaries. Watering, fertilizing, pruning, weeding, mulching & pest & diseases control are the main soft landscape maintenance activities we are involved in.
Hard landscape maintenance
We are involved in maintaining hard landscape features such as sidewalks, foot paths, retaining walls, statues, steps, amphitheaters, pergolas, arbors,, etc. Routinely we keep the hard landscape features clean by blowing or sweeping leaf litter & dirt, maintaining clean edges between the lawns and hard landscape features, removing weeds from walls, etc.
The Landscape Division at the University of Peradeniya promptly addresses emergency tree removal during natural disasters. Skilled teams are mobilized to clear fallen trees and debris caused by high winds or heavy rain, ensuring campus safety and accessibility. This rapid response minimizes disruptions and prevents potential hazards for the university community.
Trees are a very prominent landscape feature in the University. As the trees get older, it is necessary to care for these trees to maintain the health, form and function of the tree. A professional tree surgery & tree care maintenance crew was established by the division to attend to these tasks. The main activities conducted by this crew includes, cavity treatments, crown lifting, crown thinning, crown reduction, tree staking, sectional felling, tree removal etc.
Landscape division is responsible for planting trees in the University park based on the landscape requirements. The tree selection is done by the Curator with the assistance of the supervisors. Seedlings/saplings are usually raised in the nursery of the landscape division and some are procured from outside nurseries. Newly planted tress are well taken care of by the ground staff. They water the seedlings and manage weeds and pests until the tree is well established in the field.
Landscape division maintains a plant nursery to propagate the plants required for flower beds, hedges, tree planting activities etc. We have a nurseryman assigned to the nursery and he is responsible for producing the required plants, seedlings and saplings for the landscape needs.
We are also involved in designing and implementing indoor gardens and decorations. We install indoor gardens and provide plant pots for indoor decorations.
Termites infestations are one of the main issues faced by our landscape team. Termites build mounds in our lawns and attack the barks of trees. Time to time, we deploy a team of workers to manually remove termite mounds from lawns and treat the trees affected by termites.
Guinea grass (Megathyrsus maximus) is the most troublesome invasive plant in the lawns of University park. Routinely we deploy a team of workers to manually remove Guinea grass from our lawns to keep them in good condition.
